Not in condition specified
Delivery was quick but the description of the book's condition was inaccurate. It was used but certainly not used - good. There was quite a lot of wear and tear to the spine.

If you've lived from the 2nd WW thru Viet Nam you'll love this tale., if you haven't, it will be even more relevant.
This is and will be an enduring book when many others are long out of print or forgotten entirely...it just comes so close to revealing the truth about a family, a time (2 generations) and a place, a small town in West Virginia but with characters fighting far from home in the 2nd WW and in Viet Nam. The prose, both descriptive passages and dialogue, are so real, so close to the heart that the reader is made to feel a part of the story and the action. The issues of everyday life, the minor matters and the portentous, are dealt with here and in simple, straight forward and readable way, so much so that the reader, especially one who lived through this time, in a similar place and with somewhat compatible experiences, senses that he is reading a personal diary, one that hides nothing. Likewise, the unfamiliar reader will be drawn in and by the closing chapter come away entranced. The novel's beginning is a bit slow and can be confusing and irrelevant to the later text, but from there on in, the reader will be in the hands or a writer who has few peers and have a page turner to contemplate.

a great work of literary fiction
Beautiful prose. Exquisite characterization. Jayne Anne Phillips has written a haunting, memorable novel of a family you come to care for very deeply.

It was a good read
Machine Dreams was a good read. I personally liked the characters and the developments for one to the next. I wish Billy would have been in the book more. Fore me it didn't get super duper interesting until about 60% on my kindle when Danner was turning 16. I liked the setting and the description of the era, especially the town and the cars. The only reason it doesn't get a five is because it was really, really slow for me in some parts.

I can't even answer any questions because I didn't get very far on this book. Don't remember why exactly, but it was not my cup of tea.
