I had to stop ...
I had to stop in the middle of my practice (using this book and DVD) to write this review. Yes, it is that good ...I have been playing classical guitar for years and wanted to teach myself the flamenco guitar. This book is perfect in the sense that it gets right to the hear of the matter and teaches you exactly what you need. The exercises are not boring and they actually sound good; especially after you play them at normal speed. I also really like the fact that the video has two versions of each exercise: one at normal speed and another at slower speed. This really helps.I highly recommend this to anyone who is serious about learning flamenco guitar.

The best flamenco technique method I've ever found
I have both volume 1 and 2 of these with the DVD's. This is the best flamenco method I have ever found. In addition, bonus, it's a deal. I prefer these books to studying with my flamenco teacher who was more interested in showing off. The approach is very good, first you learn the right hand techniques and then you learn the compas, the music itself. The progress I have made and am making with this method is amazing. With this method, I have now added a book of flamenco studies. With the techniques I have learned from this method I am now able to do the studies and get even more practice and exposure to flamenco music.

Learning Flamenco
I am pleased with the purchase of this product. It starts out with good simple exercises, and then gets progressively harder. The book touches a lot of interesting subjects about Flamenco playing, guitars, and the masters of the style, etc., which I think gives a person a basic knowledge to start with. The DVD's are very helpful, I can't see learning this style from a book alone.I would recommend this set to anyone wanting to learn the style of Flamenco guitar playing. There are a lot of teachers out there, and a lot of Flamenco styles, which I'm finding out. But I think this is a good start. Although I think It would be kinda hard for someone without any guitar playing experience, but then again it depends on the individual.

The best flamenco guitar method I've ever seen!
I have been a professional guitarist for about 15 years and I've always had a strong desire to learn how to play flamenco guitar authentically. I tried years ago but got frustrated because of the lack of materials available for study. This book gives you the fundamentals to instantly allow you to make a true flamenco guitar sound and with a lot of practice you can become quite proficient in the style. The best thing about this book is the detail that it goes into and how completely things are explained and then shown with excellent pictures. If you follow this book to the letter, you can play flamenco too! ole!

Some reservations
I should say at the outset that overall I consider the Volume One package to be good value, for a quality book, DVD and CD. However, for someone like me, who hasn't had too much recent exposure to classical or flamenco, I have some issues, based on my initial use of the lessons. Those reservations have stopped me from ordering the Second Volume- for the time being.Firstly, the robotic dubbed English voice on the DVD is a major turn off. What were they thinking? It just doesn't encourage me to want to watch the lessons. I prefer the conversational style of Aaron Gilmartin's DVDs, or Charles Sedlak's basic introduction DVD. Secondly, I found that the DVD demonstrations of each lesson were sometimes too brief, with not enough explanation of what was happening with the hands. Other DVDs on the market slow it down, break up the movements into segments etc. Thirdly, Volume One doesn't include all Flamenco styles, and it's necessary to buy Volume 2 for coverage of all the others. Other courses I have ( such as Dennis Koster's ) give a better exposure to all styles. Personally I prefer to try all styles to see which one best suits my skills, at my current level, rather than slavishly follow the book's line of progression. I noted Dennis Koster 's book endorses that approach. Another issue I have with the Graf Martinez course, and the others I have, is - why do the earlier lessons start with Rasgueados - including Fan Rasgueados? Surely a physically hard, and potentially discouraging, technique for a beginner. However, maybe the course will grow on me as my skills hopefully develop. I hope these comments are useful to potential buyers at a similar skill level.

It's a great start. I've personally gotten lazy with my learning
The DVD helps. It's a great start. I've personally gotten lazy with my learning, but being able to show off Rasgeuos has been fun, haha. The "marble" method suggested by this book was definitely a great reference. There's more to say, but most of it is anecdotal. Simply put, I like it. Thinking purely objectively, I think it works well for an experienced musician looking to learn a new instrument/style. Having the videos from the DVD help quite a bit.

The best value in Flamenco Guitar lessons --- EVER
Gerhard Graf-Martínez has produced an excellent lesson on Flamenco guitar. I have taken weekly lessons for five years in this discipline and find Volume I adequately challenging.Graf-Martínez presents technique in great detail and the DVD provides video examples which clear any confusion. The slow-tempo versions of pieces and exercises are slow-enough that I find I can play-along with him after a few minutes learning each. I find I can then play the correct-tempo versions after a few days.I am looking forward to Volume II.

Excellent Course for Advanced Guitarists Who Want To Learn Flamenco
Very carefully-crafted study materials and easy to follow. However, you are warned at the beginning that this course takes for granted that you can read music and can play some guitar already. It is not for rank beginners at all. That said, I love the course and expect to be able to finally play Flamenco in a few months.

A thorough-going guide to toque.
The epitome of a teach-yourself guide to toque which includes examples of each kind of dance music for performance, commencing with simple, achievable melodies and progressing to more difficult pieces. The German author has produced an excellent manual, based directly upon his life time's study of Flamenco, including studying under its Spanish afficianados and includes a comprehensive history of the style which sets it perfectly within its context. A serious analytical approach which leaves nothing in doubt, requiring a basic ability to read music or supplemented in this latter respect by a toque teacher.
