VFR Airfields - Volume 1 : Southern England and South Wales (PC CD)

If, like me, you're an FSX junkie, then it will be hard to resist treating yourself to this add-on. Someone has put a lot of time and effort into recreating almost 80 airports/airfields. As I'm based not far from Farnborough airport (of the air show fame) I took a photo near the perimeter fence and then fired up FSX and flew my microlight to approximately the same location for a screen shot. I've included the real photo and FSX image below for comparison. As you can see, the distinctive curved-roof of the main building, the tower and the large glass building are all faithfully recreated. I then flew my FSX microlight the short distance to Blackbushe and was, once again, delighted to see all the major buildings depicted exactly as expected. Cannot yet vouch for other airfields but, if the same attention to detail has been applied, then they shouldn't disappoint. Didn't bother installing the Heathrow file, as I already have the hugely detailed Mega-airport package for that. Some traffic, people and even flocks of birds (can you receive BIRDTAMS in FSX?) add to the realism.Installation of the single CD was quick and straightforward. An installation security code was included on the quick-start sheet, but strangely, I didn't get any prompt to enter it. Collision detection for buildings and trees works perfectly - just tested it with a kamikaze flight, but you can fly or taxi straight through fences and signs.Only mild criticism is that the buildings and other infrastructure - trees, fences etc. end abruptly at the airfield perimeter, leaving the rest of your terrain looking oddly flat and unrealistic in comparison. Obviously that isn't a fault of this package though.Overall, if you spend a fair bit of time flying around southern England in FSX, then this will certainly enhance the realism and your enjoyment, which certainly justifies the purchase price.

I purchased this program as I wanted the details of the local south coast airfields, such as Shoreham. The product is highly inaccurate, Shoreham terminal building is lovely, but this program does not portray the reality. Waste of money

An excellent product which adds a little local colour to GA airfields, a must-have extra to the UK photographic scenery which appears not to add an extra burden to your graphics card.I have just added the long-awaited second volume (Midlands airfields) to my FSX flying and the improvement in the appearance of my local airfields, such as Halfpenny Green and Cosford is breathtaking.
