Sublime step back into time
OK, I admit it, I was never a Louis fan growing up and knew very little about any of his songs. I heard this for the first time at a gathering of friends who were spinning vinyl. This one was put on the turntable and the whole room became quiet. Between the laconic pace and the haunting melody to when Louis first starts singing this is one for the ages. I believe this may now be out of print, but if you spin vinyl and can find it, I highly recommend it, you will not be sorry. "I went down to St.James infirmary..."Highly recommended.

The master honors his Papa Joe with love, affection
The master honors his Papa Joe with love, affection, and real power. The fact that this was done shortly after Louis' first heart attack is astounding to me. Real NOLA tempos, and real music. Later Louis has much to offer those willing to listen to it on its own terms. Check this stuff out.

Pops Still Rocks (even without his 'A-game')
This is not really vintage late Pops but it's still awfully good, especially so since most if this repertory was not at the time performed as part of the All Stars regular show book. In answer to Mr. Arnold above, the complete Newport set that Columbia issued only part of in the late 50's is available as part of a multi-CD Mosaic set produced by late Pops guru Ricky Ruccardi.

Perfect sound
Top quality recording/pressing, like having Satchmo playing live in your living room. The best sounding vinyl in my entire collection of 45's and/or 33 rpm's.

Magic Louis Armstrong.
I have been enjoying the music of Louis Armstrong for over 60 years and I was unaware that this recording existed until the last few weeks. It had originally been released as a Long Playing record in the 1960's but with only 12 tracks on it. More recently it came out on the Blue Moon label as a CD, but it passed me by. So now we have all of the tracks from the recording session in September/October 1959, plus some alternative tracks as well as some tracks from other 1950's recordings, plus some recordings made in the 1920's. In all, a total of 39 tracks. Included are two versions of West End Blues ( 1928 and 1955 ) which are worth the money alone. The recording is excellent and there is also a 16 page booklet that includes the original Liner notes. The group that made the Satchmo plays King Oliver tracks was the group that visited the UK in early 1959, I was lucky enough to see Louis when he played in London, a magical event. All of the tracks on this reissue are excellent, but I would suggest that the 2 versions of " St James Infirmary " are some of the latter Louis Armstrong's best tracks. This reissue does raise the question just what else is lying ignored in some Record companies vaults ? Where, for example, is the Eddie Condon/ Louis Armstrong Newport Jazz Festival recording ? If you are a fan of Louis, you will love this recording. Buy it, you know it makes sense.

C'è passione e riverenza in queste note.
