Romantic drama starring Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson. Harvey Shine (Hoffman) is one of life's losers. A would-be jazz pianist, he earns his living in a dead-end job writing advertising jingles. When he flies to London for his daughter's wedding, he is dismayed to learn that his daughter would prefer her stepfather (James Brolin) to walk her down the aisle. While drowning his sorrows, Harvey meets Kate (Thompson), a 40-something employee of the National Office for Statistics whose life has hithero been limited to work, the occasional humiliating blind date and endless phone calls from her smothering mother (Eileen Atkins). Despite numerous setbacks and misunderstandings, a gradual connection forms between Kate and Harvey that will transform both of their lives.

Two wonderfull lead actorsPerfectBackdrop of London looking well, I lived there for many years and after I left I often felt homesick for it and movies like this are like beautiful memories and a mini break all in one.Highly recommended for the cast, the story and the scenery.

Enjoyable, not great
Someone needs to realise that when you are making a film in the centre of London, people recognise the landmarks. So going from Paddington to Somerset House via Hungerford Bridge and the South Bank doesn't work.

Last Chance - First Chance
Dustin Hoffman burst onto the cinema screen in 1967as Ben the lead in 'the Graduate' He was thirty years old playing a twenty year old. The film was hilarious and instantly became a cult film and has remained so. Anne Bancroft played the female lead, Mrs. Robinson a family friend of his parents. He always called her Mrs. Robinson even during their torrid love scenes and the song 'Here's to you Mrs. Robinson' became a hit for Simon and Garfunkel: and very pretty it was too. Mike Nicholls directed, and made his name too. So that was then. Over the years Dustin Hoffman has given us some amazing performances - Tootsie, Midnight Cowboy, Rainman. Very unusual characters expertly portrayed. And now here is 'Last Chance Harvey'. A slight story, almost soppy I would say and would suggest that Hoffman and Emma Thompson decided to do it because they weren't doing anything else. So here is this chunky seventysomething who is no looker playing the romantic lead. And very charmingly he does it too. A wealth of experience goes into his characterisation and it his performance which makes the film a pleasure to watch.

Disappointed
I ordered this product in good faith and find that, on receipt, I cannot play it on my DVD player as the operating system (if that is the word) is incompatible. I appreciated that it was imported from the US but did not realise the significance. No indication of this was given on the website.I will hope to return it.

DVD perfetto, film capolavoro, Emma Thompson superba
DVD tecnicamente perfetto.

It's NOT a romantic comedy
This is definitely not a RomCom in the accepted sense of the genre. There are no comedic situations and nobody touches, let alone kisses. Rather, it's a sensitive probing of two people at opposite ends of middle age who, in a chance encounter over a weekend, help each other recognize and overcome the defensive walls they have constructed to protect their respective hearts. The script is excellent with realistic and amusing dialogue which, wonder of wonders, manages to get through the entire film without recourse to even one 4 letter epithet. Hoffman and Thompson are so good they had me emotionally involved in their characters 10 minutes into the film before they even met. Not for everyone, the movie is all about characters, whose problems I doubt many under 25 would understand or sympathize with. The writer-director, an ex-pat Londoner, claims in the extras that he made this as a postcard to London and that he tried to make the city look like Paris. Why? How? The only similarity between the cities is a river runs through them. I lived in the west end of London years ago and the movie conjured no nostalgia in me. It's a view of areas I'm unfamiliar with. Still, the locations give the threadbare story a very pretty, romantic background.

Bellissimo
Film molto bello, magistralmente interpretato.
