Hide and Geek

Saving their hometown of Elmwood, New Hampshire, while solving a mysterious puzzle keeps these four middle schoolers on their toes until the very end of this fast-paced, quite ingenious story about true friendship and what it takes to outwit most of the adults who live there, including their parents and law enforcement! The GEEKS work together to solve each clue using their individually unique abilities and end up more deeply involved in a crime than they had planned on while pursuing the treasure hunt. Gina narrates their adventures and carefully documents all their moves. Edgar interjects quotes from one of his favorite plays, “Hamilton,” while using his knowledge of acting to aid in some of their predicaments. Elena is a scientist and considered the brains behind the team, who wears a T-shirt with a picture of Einstein on the front, and is known to sometimes pull pranks on her friends. Last but not least, Kevin is the mathematics mastermind who uses his skills with numbers in many ways, but most importantly as a safecracker! Middle schoolers will delight in trying to unravel the mystery as these friends work together to uncover the treasure that will save the town and expose the supposed heir of the toy factory that put the town on the map. A great read!

I am a bookworm. I have been reading since the age of 5-6 and am now 69. Since retirement, I read an average of 20 books/month. I can remember my mother taking me to the library every Saturday morning and I would leave with an armload of books and think I had won a lottery. I still feel that way…love the library! I have read all kinds of books throughout my years. I am currently reading psychological/espionage/murder thrillers. (No, I do not have trouble sleeping at night…I write my own chapter of a silly book instead of counting sheep and it works). Tim is a dear sweet friend, so I may be somewhat biased in my review. . However, the details in this book are so well thought out as those details in the current genre I am reading. They are amazingly accurate and flow seamlessly for “Hide and Geek”. It was also a fun book to read , not only about the ins and outs of friendships, but also a good mystery. Needless to say and because of our friendship, I also hear Tim’s crazy personality in each character he created . I certainly recommend this book for ages 8+ and give it a rating of 4 ( because I am biased). It is definitely a 3.5 and I am excited to read the sequel coming in 2023.

Great book. Well paced. Fun premise.

I loved this book from beginning to end. The story is fun and has a heartwarming message about small town living and the importance of community. The mystery is engaging, with poetic clues that teach important lessons about astronomy, history, and the arts. The characters are passionate about their individual interests in politics, science, drama, and journalism, but have a fierce loyalty for one another and form a great mystery solving team. I think lots of kids in elementary or middle school will love this book!

This was a terrific middle grade book (5th - 8th grades)! These 4 friends, mockingly called the GEEKs because their initials spell out the word, quickly own the nickname and then proudly own it. They take on a quest to save their town by solving a bunch of clues. You'll quickly fall in love with them and all of the townsfolk they encounter along the way.

I read this book with a small group of 4th grade students. They loved it! The book is full of twists and turns that have you wanting to keep reading. It did not disappoint!

This book has all kinds of twist and turns to keep your attention. The characters are very captivating. The "Team Geek" characters will have kids feeling a friendship that they will love in this book. The author has left us with wanting more!
