Great sound and half the price
Include a sugar cube speaker and various resonance boxes to fit various spaces in your loco. Works with the free Hornby HM7000 app and in the usual way too. This has a Bluetooth antenna built onto the chip so, slightly bigger than usual

For a cheaper sound decoder it's not bad
I bought one of these just to try in a TT:120 loco.I'll be honest, I don't find sound in small scales particularly effective or engaging, with a lack of depth and the chuff synchronisation never seems right (in my garden scale locos the chuffs are triggered by wheel sensors). I don't go out of my way to install sound, and locos that do have it tend to get the sound turned off after a few minutes when it becomes tedious. The decoder is a bit larger than some others due to the addition of the Bluetooth transceiver. The ability to download and install sound files for free from Hornby is a plus. They may not be as good as the more expensive sound decoders but not bad.The ability to update the decoder via Bluetooth and the Hornby app is useful, but I don't like driving trains on a touch-screen much so I'll stick to traditional DCC and my NCE system.

Good but room for improvement
Excellent idea for sound decoder but let down by being too big for quite a few hornby locos I had. Useful socket for power bank bit poor stocks from Hornby. It took 11 months to obtain their power bank which is best fitted at the same time as decoder. Hornby produce some excellent locos but also some rubbish ideas which have to be sold off at heavily discounted prices

Not for me
Burnt out on first use

Great if they work
These soynd decoders are the cheapest, biggest and least reliable type available. If they can fit in your loco and they work then they provide a superb sound set and smooth low speed control. Beckup support is thin and slow but replacements for duds normally get replaced within a month. The Bluetooth control option is great too if youve got time for each loco to load in use. Despite the downsides, l keep buying them so they must be okay!

Far too big
The HM7000 system is very good, but why why is the Next 18 decoder so large? Next 18 decoders are meant for NN and small OO locos. This decoder is nearly twice the size of other Next 18 sound decoders. It does not fit the Hornby Lion and Tiger locos. The only Hornby locos I know of that take Next 18 decoders.
