Truly the benefit of this kit is in the variety of wool fluff you'll received. There is a nice palette of colors and ample fill materials to create several small projects.Where this kit lacks substance, however, is with its instructions and tool set.The printed instructions included in the box are lacking in guidance that would be helpful to beginners in getting started with the craft. There is a broad, general outline of the fundamental technique of the craft, but nothing specific to the characters shown. For this, you need to visit the website and find the videos for the projects you wish to build. For me, I find this inconvenient as the videos are sometimes hard to find, follow, and often jump through steps. Again, for beginners, this will be discouraging.Regarding the tools, the wool mat is by far the best and most useful. It is actually a quality accessory compared to the flimsy foam pads included with many beginner kits. The included needles are fine and will get the job done, but do not include any handles for safety and control. Anyone who has done any bit of needle felting will know that needles alone can, quite literally, be a pain to work with as they are more prone to slip and poke unintended things - like fingers.If anything, I would say this is a decent kit for someone with at least some familiarity with the craft. The materials are of good quality and those familiar with the techniques will be able to reproduce the projects shown, but beginners will likely struggle.But even despite the issues I have with this kit, at ~$30 (time of writing), I still feel it's a decent value. When you jump into this guy's website and explore around, it's clear he is a talented needle felter with some neat designs to replicate and inspire you. Moreover, the 40 colors included is a good amount of material to try to replicate his designs or to go off script and make your own.In short, great if you have some experience and maybe some of your own tools, but not the best option if you're trying to get started and are learning the techniques. Of course if you're new and like the designs, go for it. Needle felting is not rocket science!

To think of this kit as a beginner’s kit is a little laughable now that I’ve created a couple of small animals. There are so many colors included that I will be creating small items for a while. I’m sure I’ll have colored wool long after the base white is gone, even though there is plenty of that to start with. It is a beginner’s kit that includes all you need to start: four needles, a felting mat (gives the needle a soft, firm work space), a large amount of white wool to use as a base, 40 dyed wool balls for covering and color, and a link to instructional videos that will have you felting after a few minutes. Though videos are probably the best way to learn, there are written instructions in the brochure, along with pictures of “Woolbuddies” that can be made. Felting is a relatively easy craft, involving shaping loose wool, then poking it with a sharp needle to fix the threads into the shapes you want. I took just white, black, grey-brown, and a pink color on a car trip and made my first “buddy” on one long car ride. My second animal - a seal - looked appreciably better to me, so I feel I made quick progress. While I am extremely happy with the kit, my needles, as others have noted, were rusted and I broke the first one within a few minutes, possibly due to its deterioration, since the second needle is still in use. The needles are very fine and sharp and must be handled carefully. The rust is an unfortunate blemish on an otherwise fantastic kit, and impacts my likelihood to give it as a gift without supplemental needles, but I find it hard to deduct a full star, given the quality of the rest of the materials, and the fact that I could use at least one of the rusty needles without impacting the finished products. Get this and see where your imagination takes you.
