a good all round read
If like me you have just started out then this book is a real eye opener. Inside the covers it is packed with all sorts of different training programs for a learner wanting to get fit to the more serious athlete. we have started to make plans of our own using the advice from this book. if you have limited training time but still want to compete then this book is worth the read. there are drills for the pool mountain bike training cycling and running. Fantastic work outs for a treadmill as well. the one thing i will say is by the end you will need to get a heart rate moniter for the zones.

There are better
I wasn't totally impressed with this book. There are far better out there, if I was you buy the Triathlete's Training Bible. This book looks very much like just a cut down version of the Triathlete's Training Bible, all the same information is included here in much the same format, just very much cut down.

Specific, Measurable, Realistic, Achievable, Relevant, Timely - All easily applied to the contents of this book
Since getting into triathlon at the tender age of 42 three years ago, and subsequently being hungry for information and answers to suit a lifestyle which was going to include triathlon training, family and work, I bought this book, "Training Plans for Multisport Athletes" to start my second year of tri training. Why did I wait? Well it took a while for me to find the right book and also I was torn between a coach and being self-coached. Losing my job helped me to make the decision! In 2010 the book was used exclusively to train towards the UK 70.3 Ironman and also for the Antwerp 70.3 IM races. I suffered an injury four weeks out from the UK race and consequently missed the peak volume weeks and 'enjoyed' a very quiet taper. The Antwerp race some 5 weeks later was a different story! In both races I raced my plan and was confident I could finish. The Antwerp race caught me by surprise however as I was almost minute perfect for each part of the race versus my plan, and nearly 1.5hrs faster than I was at the UK race. (Obvious course differences clearly play a part in the improvement). The UK race was finished in 6h 23m and Antwerp at 5h 1m. Naturally my peer groups started to ask the questions about the possibility of taking on a longer race. Not wanting to bore you with details, I entered the Switzerland Ironman race in July this year and finished inside my plan with a time of 11h53m.Just to say that without the structured, methodical and more importantly, realistic training plans as laid out in this book I may not have been able to make the achievements I have. I would recommended the book to any triathletes who are either considering self-coaching or you're new to this game and are looking for some sensible direction. I used the book religiously. Maybe this is "The New Testament" of tri training?

A great bible of training schedules and information
If you're looking for a scientifically-proven collection of training schedules for the sports listed on the cover than this is the book for you. This quickly covers the theory behind effective training and then presents a number of training schedules based on your sport and time available. My first Ironman training schedule I got off the web and although it worked I was never quite sure of the purpose of each day's exercise, how it fit into the schedule for the week, and how that week fit into the overall plan and although I finished I was not happy with the results. Gale's training programs are scientifically proven and you'll understand what each session is for and why you're doing it.Another thing I liked is she addresses a lot of common questions athletes in training have, such as "If I skip a day do I make it up and how? How can I insert a race into my training schedule?" and others. She also addresses nutrition with actual formulas that you can use to calculate how many carbs, protein and fats you should consume everyday and immediately after exercise for optimal performance and recovery.I was not used to workout codes (example "Swim 1:00 E(FORM)") which took some getting used to, and there are explanations in both the front and the back of the book so it requires some thumbing through while getting used to it, but as you ramp up on the syntax all that goes away. Not a big deal but I think it could have been consolidated better. Also - if you are a triathlete I would highly recommend getting her companion book Workouts In A Binder for swimming. The swim workouts in the book are almost non-existent and the Binder is basically a must have. Although I think the book itself should include more workout routines for swimming I would have bought the Binder anyway; it has a lot of different workouts that keep swimming challenging and fun and its waterproof so you can keep it with you in the pool.(I also got the water/sweat-proof Workout In a Binders for indoor cycling by Friel and Run Workouts by Bobby McGee to compliment this book. In terms of "meshing" with Gale's book the cycling binder works well but the running does not. The running book is fine by itself for running but I could not "make it fit in" for triathlon training.)Overall I love this book and paired up with the Swim and Indoor Cycling binders they are now my IM training bible.

useful plans for the multisport athlete. Comprehensive and with added value, takes some time to understand though
Different training plans for the curious athlete. needs some study but definitely worth it.Can't compare much as this is my first english book on the topic, however I am always hard to convince :)
