You're looking here to try and save some money because those other geared reels seem kinda expensive. I've been there, and I bought these reels, and I regret it. They're terrible. The plastic is flimsy and I've had multiple components break - the lock (tiny piece of plastic) and the feed bar have both broken. The "expensive" reels take 10x the abuse of our farm and have lasted multiple years while these little guys lasted a few months. DON'T DO IT.

Cheap quality one of the reels immediately stripped the gears first use, the other one I haven’t had any issues with yet. The company reached out to me and is issuing a refund for the problem reel. They were saying it’s not a common problem but just be aware.

We live in the country and I have 500 feet of electrified fencing around garden and orchard to keep the animals out. I buy 17-gauge for the hot-wire strands installed on insulators at various levels of the fences, and I need the spool for repairs and new installation. It’s not easy to pay out the wire without getting it twisted or kinked.I got this gear-cranked spool and dispenser and it’s made my job easier. It works like a fishing reel. First thing I do when I buy a new spool of wire is to place it on a piece of pipe so it will spin freely, then put it through the guides to this unit and fix a loop around the center rod. Then I wind it onto the reel.Again, like a fishing reel, this device has a geared ratchet that makes it easy to wind the entire spool of wire onto it. Now, when I’m ready to install a new strand of wire, I pay it out from the reel, keeping much better control of the wire.Works great! A good investment that makes the fence wiring job easier.

The reels are nice but the poly wire is not that great strands break easily

I've got a modest home veggie garden that I need to protect from the local deer population. Since I need to rototill the garden each year, any fencing to keep the deer out would need to be taken down and re-installed each spring, making conventional fencing a difficult and expensive option.Electric fencing is a much simpler option for keeping the deer out, and is much easier to take down and re-install than a conventional fence. However... even with a modest-sized garden, putting up polywire around it is still a significant chore, using five strands and totaling about 800 ft. It's not bad for initial installation, since you are pulling off a pre-wound spool, but winding that much wire back onto a spool is a tedious chore to do by hand.This fencing reel solves the problems nicely. It has a 3:1 gear ratio, so it's easy and fast to wind the polywire, and because the spool has high sidewalls, you don't need to worry about it slipping off the end of the spool and creating a birdsnest of tangled line.While this reel isn't likely to save me any time when re-installing the polywire this spring, it definitely was a timesaver for taking it down.Bottom line: If you have any significant amount of polywire fencing to regularly take down and put back up, a fencing reel like this is a definitel must-have item.

I picked this reel up for my sweet, OCD having hubby for his garage. He is an organizer like no other. He is always looking for ways to keep his tools (I never knew a human being could need or use so many tools) and other things he prefers I not touch, neat and organized making it much easier and quicker for him to grab what he needs for work or for projects. I knew he would not be putting up any electric fencing, but thought he could use it for extension cords, hoses or use it as part of one of his famous hillbilly home economics projects! And sure enough, when he opened the package, I could literally see his brain power shifting thru the gears headed straight into maximum overdrive mode! He spit out so many ideas, I had to just nod my head yes and act like I had some clue as to what the heck he was talking about! I do remember something about putting the dogs long recall training leash on the thing, mounting the reel onto a tree or to the giant chainsaw carved totem pole he is working on, and letting the dogs test how well the reel works...stay tuned for updates here because I have a feeling we are about to have way too many "BAAAAAAAABY!! Hold my beer!!!" moments with this fencing reel!
