The voices were outstandingly good and the animation was extraordinary. It avoids all that cloying gooiness that often spoils animations. There is always a bit of sentimentality in films like this but nothing I couldn't handle. All the elements of the story set in some idealised medieval period came together in a way that suspended disbelief. The colours and textures are as vivid as anything I've ever seen in an animation and the animals have a sinuous living quality. The music was good and the story had some of the darkness of a real fairy tale. The central character Merida is a good strong heroine to counterbalance all that Barbie crap that little girls have to contend with. The little brothers didn't appeal so much because they were too cute. I bought it for my sister's 9 year old but I haven't heard how she liked it yet. The voice acting was superb and made this one of the best feature length animations I've seen.

Good film for most ages
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I'd seen good reviews and go along with them. The voices and music enhanced it. It was scarier than I had expected - younger children should probably have an adult with them - on the other hand I grew up reading Grimm's fairy tales and not much is as scary as they are to a child! It covered serious issues if one chose to see it that way, but with a light humourous touch and ended with a thoroughly up beat message. I shall definitely watch it again - my grandsons like it too.

Long ago in the Highlands
A new movie from Pixar. Moving away from sequels and adverts for Cars merchandise for now, they return once more to a wholly original story. Which is always when they are at their strongest. Long ago in Scotland, there lives a young princess called Merida. Being strong willed and free spirited and a brilliant Archer aren't quite the qualities usually required to be a dutiful princess and a good wife. But when the time comes for her to do her duty to her family and marry the son of a rival monarch, the prospect doesn't appeal to her. An attempt to change her fate leads to problems for her family, and the fate of her kingdom hangs in the balance. Can she deal with a deadly monster who almost once killed her father, and set things right? Brave features truly beautiful animation - Merida's long curly red hair being a particular stand out. It has superb scenery, brought to the screen with eye catching visuals. A great voice cast, most of whom are either Scottish or English. The role of the King fits Billy Connolly down to a tee and he's superb in the part. And it does have a storyline with a few interesting twists and turns along the way. It does also feature Merida's three younger brothers, who are rascally tearaways. They may appeal to young children but older individuals might find them annoying. There are also themes of destiny and life lessons that do feel just a little familiar. So it's not quite up there with the greatest pixar releases. But it's a fun and entertaining piece of film making that is lovely to look at and offers many delights, so it's definitely worth getting. Do be sure to watch to the very end of the final credits for an extra scene. The disc has the following language and subtitle options: Languages: English, French. Subtitles: English, French. The disc begins with lots of trailers and adverts. But you can skip these via the next button on the dvd remote. And most of these can be found in the sneak peeks section of the disc anyhow. The only extras are: A commentary from various members of the production staff. La Luna. The short - five minutes approx - cartoon that played before Brave on it's cinema release. This starts out a bit strangely and you can never be quite sure where it's going. But the ending is quite beautiful and makes the whole thing well worth watching. Plus the Legend of Mordu. Another five minute long feature, this one featuring a character from Brave telling you about the origin of the monster from it. Some of this may seem familiar from the film but the ending of this short is superb and also makes it worth a look. Don't watch it till after you've watched the movie though.

A delight from beginning to end!
From the opening scenes with the very young Merida playing hide & seek with Queen 'Mum' on her birthday & Dad's inapproriate (in mum's eyes) birthday gift of a bow with arrows to Merida's disgust at the arrival of the 'Suitors' - & when you see them you'll sympathise- till the very last note of the credit music. We never took our eyes off the screen. Thoroughly entertaining, non-stop laughter, thrilling in the 'scary' parts (I don't quite follow the reviews where they say there was no drama). Touching with the emotional upset between the family members (not to give too much away) then hilarity again with the triplets! We enjoyed every frame & eagerly await the release of the DVD. Go & see it & have a great day/night out for the family.

A Fun Adventure!
Any film with a heroine, not a 'hero' is off to a good start in my book and this just gets better and more fun as it goes on. The quality of the animation is first class (any geek will be looking at things like hair and fur!) and the slapstick humour blends seamlessly with the adventure and action. The wild Scots, led by the voices of Billy Connolly as King Fergus and Emma THomson as Queen Elinor provide a colourful backdrop for the story of the headstrong Merida (KellyMcDonald) who needs to learn the value of home and honesty as well as the value of freedom and the need to be brave. A fun family film!

Best yet
Being a Scot, I was a little bit wary of seeing this film. I was thinking that the Scots would be made a laughing stock of. And I was right, I haven't laughed so much during a film in years, in fact, I haven't heard some of the words used in this film in years. I must admit, I thouroughly enjoyed this film even with the moral ending(seems Disney is rubbing of on Pixar) don't let this put you of though. The pluses well outweigh the minuses. Animation is again of a very high standard. The cast of Scots used was an added plus as there were no phoney Scots accents. All in all, a film well worth watching!
