Ralph Bakshi's animated version of the seminal fantasy trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkein, made by overlaying animation on live action actors (a unique pre-computer graphics technique). Set in the fictional world of Middle Earth, The Lord of the Rings tells the epic story of Frodo, a Hobbit who must defeat the evil figure Sauron who holds the Ring of Power, which controls the fate of all Middle Earth. On the way he and his band of friends and cousins must do battle with Black Riders, a Balrog and various other animated perils.Extra Content• Star Wars: The Clone Wars Complete Season 1 Trailer• Forging through the darkness

A great & sadly incomplete version of LOTR - blu ray
A quite brilliant version of the Legendary book...If your a LOTR fan & have yet to see this take it's a no brainer to buy this.I found the Blu ray a worthwhile addition to my collection...It has some grain here & there but still looks decent in general. Is it worth the upgrade? It depends how much you like the film tbh -It's not a massive step on from the DVD.I certainly am happy to own it.Extras-Half hour Ralph Bakshai documentary (Worthwhile)Can't remember if we had that on the DVD or not.Great shame they never got chance to do part 2 & finish this version ...still, lets be thankful for what we do have.

Lords of a Difficult Production. Warner Blu-ray.
Credit must be given to Bakshi and his team for pulling off this feat. Such a long animated film about a literary work was deemed unadaptable at the time. Admittedly, the result shows weaknesses and technical shortcuts due to a lack of budget, and therefore time. The scenes involving numerous characters and entire troops of fighters couldn't be shown in a classic cartoon. The director resorted to filmed and retouched actors using photographic techniques. The adaptation could only be halfway through. And the studio didn't want to repeat the experience. What's now worth is a mediocre Blu-ray with a few bonus features. Which is better than nothing.Blu-Ray Region All. English (5.1) an French, German & Latin Spanish audio (2.0) The same in Subtitles.

Better in Blu-ray
Having first had this film on video way back in the dark ages, each upgrade has made it more viewable. The standard dvd was a big improvement but blu ray is even more so as far as i am concerned.Ok Bakshi took a few liberties with the basic story but the film is fairly true to Tolkien.Colours are much improved & this is not now so dark that you cannot see the action. When i first saw this no one had attempted Tolkien before so maybe i am biased but would recommend buying this.

At Last!!!
From a child I loved this. Sure its unfinished and ends at Helms Deep, but that doesn't matter, this is Bakshi at his finest. Not too much to say about the blu ray, the picture and sound are about as good as they will ever get but not that different to the dvd version to be honest. There is however a nice documentary on the making of the film which will appeal to Bakshi fans like my self. For the money I would recommend upgrading, absolute bargain!!!

A classic very different from the Peter Jackson trilogy but great in its own way...
This was always a favourite of mine as a child, its a great retelling of Tolkien's classic story but also carries its own unique approach due to the visual style only associated to Ralph Bakshi at that time. Many people hark on about how it was unfinished, yes it was and so abruptly ends as things start getting interesting during The Two Towers part of the saga. There are also some inaccuracies if you are a Tolkien geek like me - such as Saruman being referred to as 'Aruman'. However the final film that exists is very enjoyable and authentic and is of a different time when animation was a painstaking artform, the rotoscoping blend of animation and realtime is also rough in places but just adds to this being a unique experience. The voice acting and musical score by Leonard Rosenman is also first rate. If you enjoyed this I highly recommend another Bakshi classic made around the same time called called Fire & Ice.The LOTR films by Peter Jackson were simply excellent (and I believe they also carried some small homages to this movie), however if you are looking for a very different take give this a try.

one to rule them all
i was sceptical as to what this was like, I never saw it as a child; at least not all the way through. i was surprised at how much i liked it/ the animation was brilliant, set the mood perfectly, story is almost the same as the Peter Jackson films rather than the Tolkien books.
