A different kind of drum&bass
Om's debut album heralds the re-emergence of the powerhouse rhythm section of the mighty Sleep. They feel no need to add a replacement guitarist to take over from Matt Pike (would that be possible anyway?), so use just drums, bass and vocals. This idea could send out panic signals of a Jazz Odyssey-style noodling snoozefest, but fear not, this is hypnotic, pounding, heavy stuff. The bass sound produced by Al Cisneros is seriously heavy and distorted, reminding me of the muffled guitar tone of bands like Saint Vitus in particular. Strange as it may seem for a band in this genre, the lack of guitar really isn't a problem. In fact, being able to fully hear and appreciate that awesome bass sound just adds to the appeal. The album contains only 3 tracks, the opening 21 minute epic 'On the Mountain at Dawn' being the real standout for me; not a million miles away from Sleep's Dopesmoker/ Jerusalem.I think it's safe to assume that a fair few godzilla proportioned herbal cigarettes were used in the making of this beast...you can practically smell it as the disc spins.Anyone into Sleep and their ilk should be happy as a pig in plopsies with this. Roll on (or maybe roll up) the next album.
