Whilst not the lowest power UV fly killer in the Vermatik range, this little unit proved extremely effective. It beats insecticide sprays and flypaper strips hands down. In just a couple hours it had caught and killed over 2 dozen flies. The secret of its success I suspect is its twin UVA 368nm wavelength strip lights (tubes) which flying insects find particularly attractive when the trap is switched on. Once the fly is within the outer wire mesh it is difficult for it to escape without striking the 'live' internal mesh which probably carries around 2,000V, a lethal current for any small insect.The UV light is actually invisible to the human eye but it appears as bright as the Sun to flying insects. The tubes are internally coated with a phosphor which emits a bright pale blue light when the fly killer is switched on. I am using this blue light as a kind of night light to illuminate a stairway and corridor. I initially mounted the fly killer in my bedroom but the blue light is too intense for a small room and it kept me awake. Also, UV light can be harmful if viewed directly over long periods of time. I would therefore recommend locating the fly killer somewhere where it is unlikely to draw attention and a direct gaze.I have used smaller, lower-powered, lantern-like UV fly killers before, of a type very common on eBay, and they are moderately effective. However, the Vermatik 16W electric fly killer is in an altogether different league being about 4 - 5 times as powerful and using tubes of a very specific wavelength. That is the key to its vastly superior performance.What surprised me most of all was the overall quality feel of the fly killer. It is well designed and uses quality materials and it did not cost the earth. Highly recommended.

So far so good - definitely a reduction in the number of flies . The unit did arrive without the spare bulb I paid for but the seller rectified this immediately and sent one by return

After researching and reading customer responses I decided to try this zapper. To be honest I was expecting much. However this year has seen a huge influx of flies so wanted to try something. It arrived on time, and simply remove from box plug in and away you go. The box also came with 2 spare bulbs.Eager to see if it was working I sat in our kitchen for an hour hoping to hear the sweet zap sound... But nothing happened. So as evening came we left it on as the family took a much earned trip to the cinema. Upon our return the first thing I did was to look in the catch tray. Sure enough 4 little fried flies awaited me. Since then we have purchased a plug timer and so the zapper comes on in the evening and s***s off around bedtime. Every morning I am greeted with fried flies in the tray.I can honestly say that this little beauty works a treat! We have placed it on top of one of our kitchen cabinets firstly to be on the same level as the flies flight path and secondly to keep it out the way of small fingers.

I am reviewing this review after using this product for just under the year. When it was almost a year old, the bulbs fused. I had particularly chosen this product because the bulbs can be replaced. I ordered two bulbs and when they arrived I replaced them as per the instructions. upon switching the zapper on, it was still not working. I assumed the bulbs had been faulty and bought another set. It still did not work and I found that the actual zapper appeared to have died when the bulbs fused. The warranty was no longer valid as by the time the replacement bulbs arrived, the zapper was over the year old. I put this down to bad luck as the overall reviews for this product seem good. I then purchased another one which I have had the exact same issue with. I contacted the manufacturer and they said "I would say that it is the zappers that are faulty." when I asked about returning the faulty zappers the reply was "Unfortunately the items are out of warranty which means they aren’t eligible for return". So please be warned that in my experience these units are disposable. If you can afford to or do not mind paying this sort of money for a years use then this is a pretty good zapper but I can not afford to replace a unit yearly so I will be looking for an alternative.

Excellent product and kills flies and other beasties every efficiently - only one major flaw - the cable is ridiculously short! I bought 2m of white cable, took the Zapper to pieces and fitted the longer cable so we can now suspend it at the best height to do its job. I have read this crit before so was expecting to have to modify the Zappper. Luckily I can do tis sort of job but others would find it very annoying. 2m of cable is really a minimum and would add only pence to the price. Hark ye unto your customers!!!

We had to leave this device on for a long time before it killed a fly, indeed I saw one of the insects land on the tray underneath the electric grille then fly off again! But it does work, and has accounted for about 3 flies to date. It is very light and portable. One criticism is that the electric flex is quite short; but overall, I'm satisfied with this purchase, especially since the price is reasonable.

didn't work for unknown reasons , when i took it out of the box it was rattling and found a screw , 2 washers and a bolt fall out from the inside of the top part (no idea what they were meant to be attached internally or if they were meant to be spares but as they weren't in their own bag like the rest of the wall screws / raw plugs and the hanging chain) , there is no on/off switch on the unit even though the image shows one also the design is different from the images and the cable isn't a fitted to the unit its a kettle plug connection (perhaps its a more recent version of the product) , didn't come with any additional bulbs like it stated in the description the only good thing i could surmise decent power flex length (about 2m approx)cant really speak for its effectiveness as when i plugged it in nothing happenedreturning the item for a refund and getting a different one
