House of Cards - Season 05 [DVD]

With the political maelstrom over the past year or so, what we need is good escapist drama... About corrupt, conniving, cunning politicians. Perfect!Kevin Spacey is delightfully twisted, as in past seasons, as Frank Underwood. His unique mix of dark sarcasm and sardonic wit makes him perfect for the role, surrounded by Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, other familiar faces and a few new characters.I binge on DVD's in lieu of NetFlix. I started with an episode or two a night of this season, but as I got deeper into it I had to keep watching, engrossed, until I ran the last 4 episodes in one night.At first, it seemed like this season was moving slowly compared to previous seasons. However, like the title, a house of cards takes a while to build and collapses in seconds, a flurry of rapidly moving pieces, hard to track. Many pieces from previous seasons neatly wove back into this season, including some that felt resolved and complete already. (Trying...so hard... to avoid spoilers! They're elsewhere on the 'net if you want to look.)It's difficult to tell, given the current political climate, if fiction is mirroring reality or vice versa. Given the choice, I'll watch House of Cards over the news channels any day. Bravo for another masterfully crafted, tightly knit season - so looking forward to the next one!Edit: The above was written before all heck broke loose about Kevin Spacey. While I still think the series is well-done, what may have been happening behind the scenes greatly saddens me. Kudos to the rest of the cast and crew for a well done, engaging show.

This is where a half star would come in handy. It's a 4.5 for sure. The original UK edition from 25 years(?) ago was a sharp, scary wake up call. Yes, this probably does happen in the House of Commons and 10 Downing Street. The determined focus to use deceit and threat to gain power can lead to ........ well, you might ask, "but I couldn't possibly comment ....". Just watch the show. So, despite Stacey's stellar performance it actually comes across as slightly weak compared to Ian Richardson's. It is also overly long. Unlike a series like 'The Wire' where not one episode is wasted, there are a number of episodes of the 'HoC' when I questioned the point. Regardless, it's a series that everyone should watch. Some would say we live in weird political times and having got to the end of this epic show I couldn't help but think that many of today's key players most probably watched it too! Fact can be stranger than fiction?!

Great show and dvd came as described

Ok, we're going to ignore the Kevin Spacey issues. This is about the series. I've enjoyed the series since the first episode, and this season... this season has added so many subplots and opened up so many random doors that it is becoming far less believable than it has ever been. Yes, there is subterfuge in real life politics, but this season takes that to a whole new level. Previous seasons ... you could suspend disbelief enough, as it was almost all plausible. This season I feel borrowed too heavily from current political conspiracy, and dialed it all up to 11. It made it so you were definitely taken out of the "this could be real" mentality that the other seasons balanced so well. I am hoping that the 6th season reins it in a bit.

I am certain that this review will not help anyone unless you had the same technical problem. Unfortunately this is about the quality of the first DVD disc, not the quality of the show itself. It locked and skipped 8 times during the viewing - and this is unique to this disk - others work fine on our new player. Even with that issue, the parts we saw were very good, although we are not completely sure about the entire episode until we see it all. I plan to return the set and hope to get a new one that works well.
