The 3-Season Diet: Eat the Way Nature Intended: Lose Weight, Beat Food Cravings, and Get Fit

Ayurveda for the western world
I have studied Ayurveda for a very long time and despite having many very good books on the subject I still found this to be quite engaging and useful. To anyone unfamiliar with the ancient Indian science of life, this book explains the overall approach to shifting the diet according to seasons in a wonderful way. It is extremely helpful to know how and why our food should reflect the natural changes in local nature. People who find this book boring or too convoluted must be too accustomed to dumb diet books which treat people like idiots and just tell you what to do without teaching anything of substance. If that is what you want, keep going. This book explains the how and why of it all while sharing some great practical approaches to beginning to apply Ayurvedic wisdom in your life. If you implement even a few of the suggestions you will notice a big positive change in overall energy which will compel you to learn more. That's how I ended up studying it on my own for so long.In addition to the information about food he offers some terrific tips on how deceptively simple breathing exercises can deliver tremendous benefits. Do not dismiss that as "just breathing". It is so much more.He even offers a great segment which details short and simple yoga postures to use seasonally, either to get you going or to add to you existing exercises. And in the end there are 3 extensive grocery lists which show the foods to focus on the most, only sometimes or to avoid for each season. That is a terrific asset which will make it very easy, even if this idea is new and seems odd. Some folks balk at this as not being scientific or going against current nutrition trends. Thank goodness. Nutritional trends come and go. This is based on a 5000 year old and highly efficacious system for working with natural rhythms to bring our bodies into balance and it is so beyond trendy diets it is a breath of much needed fresh air.If you are seeking a way to feel calm, strong and healthy, to bring things into a place of balance or to release excess weight this is a fantastic resource. This is why Deepak Chopra recommends this book despite selling his own on the same subject.

Excellent book
If you are interested in knowing a healthy way of losing weight, improving your life and all this by eating everything, this is the book for you. This is one of the best books explaining a diet routine based on age old Ayurveda. Usually I come across books written by authors who has good knowledge in Ayurveda but do not know how to express it well in English or vice versa. John Douillard has an excellent way of explaining the complicated yet great principles of Ayurveda in simple language. I had purchased 3 other Ayurveda books along with this book. This was the only one I could finish at one sitting. I am from India, land of Ayurveda but strangely, I developed an interest in the subject only after coming to this country. I am not (yet) interested (nor ready) in understanding all the underlying philosophies of Ayurveda but wanted to understand how to fine tune my diet based on Ayurvedic principles & my unique body constitution. And this book was perfect to give me just enough details. One thing I would say negative about this book is that - I wonder whether he went a bit too far in debunking other fad diets out there. I mean it isn't wrong, whatever he is saying is correct however I wonder whether he could've talked atleast generally without mentioning their names and such. Except this one teeny tiny disagreeable aspect, I LOVE this book a lot. I have changed my eating habits based on his suggestions. I still haven't managed to take 1-2 hr break for my lunch though, still on my to do list :-) I am also following his breathing technique suggestions & the morning exercise routines. I am already seeing an incredible change in my life. I am such a fan of the book and am recommending the book and his techniques to all my friends now.

Logical
I read this prior to attending a seminar by the author. The book is great, and explains the basics. Combined with the seminar - it really makes sense once you understand the theory of keeping a natural balance. I learned many more things to do to maintain balance in the seminar that are not in the book. If the book makes sense to you, I recommend attending the seminar for additional info, or reading from the authors web site for more info.

Buy it if you want to be healthy and build endurance
I am not new to Ayurveda, and I have to say that John Douillard explains things from a very western point of view while integrating Ayurveda eating habits. I love that I can now recommend a book to my friends who just don't understand Ayurveda when I try to explain, but still want to to better for themselves health wise. There are many examples of what to start off eating for each season, how to work on properly breathing and a few simple exercises to get you started. He teaches you how to build endurance for the long run. The first half of the book points out many popular diets and why they are not good year round, but for what seasons each one is good for - if you are familiar with that sort of thing. I was not, but I know many who are. I cannot recommend this book enough. A must read and do! I have been practicing what is in this book and from what I found in some of this author's materials on his site that supplement this book and I feel great. It took a few weeks just to build up the habits and do things correctly. Now I'm just going and I can do way more physically than I have been able to do in a while due to my own health circumstances.

Convoluted simple ideas
I wanted to like this book after seeing the author on an alternative healing show. Basically, the principles boil down to: 1) eat in season, 2) with the lunchtime meal being the biggest of the day and 3) breath deeply and fully. He spends 338 pages complicating and convolution these simple ideas. Maybe a ghostwriter should have been hired?
