Mind the gap!
I didn’t buy this from Amazon, but a family member did as a gift for me.Tamiya is my very favorite model company. Their engineering is top-notch and attention to detail is superb. And I’ve built some of their more complex 1/35 armored vehicles and found this consistent across the board, be it aviation or land subjects. That being said, this kit was a disappointment (or at least my sample). The biggest issue was the huge gap between the forward fuselage section and the main (photo of the top of the aircraft showing in-progress repair) located in a highly visible area behind the cockpit. Unfortunately a gap that bad is slightly beyond my skill level to repair it so it is unnoticeable. The gears to work the variable geometry of the wings is nothing short of genius, and the metal bar included ensures it won’t stress the upper fuselage over time. Also worthy of praise, Tamiya included three steel rods to be built inside each landing gear strut to support the weight of the model (THANK YOU TAMIYA!). I’m loving the rubber tires in this kit. The landing gear overall is apparently of the original molding (see dated sprue in photos) and is showing its age. The nose cone is removable to reveal the complex radar which made the F-14 such a lethal weapon. Unfortunately the radar dish was too large for the nosecone to fit on my sample, so it was omitted and the nose glued on.Lastly, the issue with panel lines. The forward fuselage has engraved (correct) panel lines. The main fuselage has a mix of raised (incorrect) and engraved panel lines, with one of the main fuselage halves date stamped 1993. I was expecting a post-2000 mold for this kit, but the only modern parts were weapons choices and exhaust nozzles. Everything else is from the latter half of the 1900’s (LOL!).I’d still build it all over again so I’ll recommend it but only for modelers 14 and up, and be prepared for a lot of filling and sanding in a few areas.
