Eve of the Daleks - Great fun! Legend of the Sea Devils - Big adventure!
Eve of the Daleks: Not an adventure to take too seriously, this one is Doctor Who's take on Ground Hog Day - with Daleks! - who have Gatling gun blasters now! Trapped in building with Yaz and Dan and two bystanders, the Doctor has to figure how to keep them all from getting exterminated permanently after time resets itself several times. Good, heartwarming, fun storytelling.Legend of the Sea Devils: Big adventure to add to the Sea Devil mythos and to explore the legendary Madame Ching. It also explores the relationship between Yaz and the Doctor. Awkward for sure, and heartbreaking, but it worked for this Doctor's character. Still a good adventure.

Two Fun Thirteenth Doctor Adventures!
“Doctor Who: Eve of the Daleks & Legend of the Sea Devils” collects the latest two specials starring Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor. The first episode tells a “Groundhog Day”-type story in which the Doctor and her companions Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill) and Dan Lewis (John Bishop) find themselves trapped in a recurring time-loop in a storage facility trying to outsmart a Dalek alongside Nick (Adjani Salmon) and Sarah (Aisling Bea), a renter at the storage facility and its manager. They must improvise with all the items Nick has stored while working against the clock and their own stress. Yaz and Dan also discuss Yaz’s feelings for the Doctor. The story is a great, tense adventure and one of the best standalone Thirteenth Doctor stories. It also nicely continued the tradition of telling Dalek stories in the New Year’s specials.“Legend of the Sea Devils” sees the Doctor and her companions facing off against the Sea Devils, creatures who first appeared in the Third Doctor story, “The Sea Devils” (1972), and last appeared in the Fifth Doctor story, “Warriors of the Deep” (1984). The story takes place in China in the year 1807, featuring the pirate queen Madam Ching/Zheng Yi Sao (Crystal Yu), who seeks clues to Ji-Hun’s (Arthur Lee) lost Flor de la Mar treasure. In the process, Madam Ching accidentally frees the Sea Devil leader, leading to the death of Ying Wai (David K.S. Tse). Wai’s son, Ying Ki (Marlowe Chan-Reeves), seeks revenge against Madam Ching, but the two have to put their differences aside to defeat the Sea Devils. The Doctor and Yaz travel back in time 274 years to find how the Sea Devils connect with Ji-Hun and the Flor de la Mar. The result is a fun adventure story with some nice twists. It further develops the relationship between the Doctor and Yaz, but has a bittersweet tone as the penultimate episode of Jodie Whittaker’s tenure.

New Year's Day and Easter Specials 2022
This blu ray features the first two 2022 specials. I really like Eve of the Daleks which is set right before New Year's. It's a fun story and the cast is great in it. I also really like Aisling Bea [as Sarah] and Adjani Salmon [as Nick]. Legend of the Sea Devils is much more...I guess iffy might be it. I actually like the Sea Devils and they look pretty cool here but the story comes across a bit disjointed. I don't dislike it as much as some others seem to but it's definitely a bit of a let down particularly after that great song that Nathan Evans did promoting the episode.

The Doctor is in (a whole lot of trouble)
I'm sold on Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor. I'm not sold on a lot of the writing in her run on the show, sadly. A very competent doctor saddled with some ham-fisted, hackneyed writing, never more apparent than in these two specials. Actually scratch that, a lot of Season 13 (Flux) was a mess.In Groundhog Day, or Eve of the Daleks if you prefer, the Doctor and her companions are stuck in a time loop, living New Year's Eve 2021 over and over again. This is a pretty tired Sci-Fi concept at this point, done to better effect by the aforementioned Bill Murray classic, and The X-Files, who tackled the idea in the sixth season episode Monday, released in 1999, over 20 years previous. Pretty sure one or two Star Trek series did it as well.Yes, it's neat to see the Doctor suss out the solution here, but it's all incredibly paint by numbers, with a few "guest companions" who actually manage to outshine the Doctor's regular companions, and Yas in particular.Legend of the Sea Devils is a little more original in terms of story, but not particularly compelling, and saddled with the "so late in Whittaker's run why would you even try?" romance angle between the Doctor and Yaz. Honestly, of all of the companions of the 13th Doctor, Yaz was the least interesting, and the chemistry between the characters virtually non-existent. Not at all against the show going this route - it actually sort of makes sense that a character who can regenerate into a male or female wouldn't necessarily be hung up on gender. But if the sparks don't fly, they don't fly. And they really don't. It just felt shoehorned in because 13's time was drawing nigh.On the plus side, modern New Who looks fantastic, the production values are better than ever, and it's a vast improvement over early blu-ray releases. So there's that.
