The Very Best of Etta James: The Chess Singles

There were many songs that I wasn't familiar with. Of the three discs, I can't say one was a winner. I'd like to have a disc with the songs that have continued to be popular so I could sing along.

Great sound quality, love the first 2 cds song wise. The 3rd cd is more of a disco style electronic sound crap. This being said, it’s still worth what I paid for it. Good selection of songs, and nobody can purrr, or growl like Etta.

Here we have 3 cd's of Etta James Chess Recordings. This collection contains some of her greatest performances for the label with a couple of songs that have not been available for a long time. I was surprised to find "The Breaking Point" in this collection. "Bobby Is His Name" is another great recording. A large portion of these recordings are in STEREO and the remastering is good. This collection is a European product and I've seen it on line for $15. It's worth it.

The tracks noted on the sleeve bear little relation to the tracks on the CD. This is mostly true of the 2nd CD than the first. The CD contains 3 more tracks than the sleeve suggests, for instance. This is true for the replacement CD as well.

This is a ridiculously good-value collection of Etta's output on Chicago's Chess label. The sound is crystal clear throughout and there's not a dud track to be found. She even manages to turn the somewhat soppy 'I got you babe' into a blistering slice of raunchy soul. You'd be mad to pass up this chance to own the prime of Miss Etta James, one of the hardest-hitting and most soulful of female vocalists. If nothing else, you can listen to 'I'd rather go blind' till the cows come home.

I'm not an expert on Etta, I'd only heard a few songs from her and bought this album out of curiosity.I love it! I now have it in my laptop and in my phone so I can listen to it al the time. There are lots of great songs but also quite a few not-so-great songs that seem to have been added as fillers. It's quite heterogene with some blues, some soul, some ballads and so on. Overall it's a great collection to have to get introduced to Etta's voice but I guess the real fans would go for a more targetted CD.

I only knew of Etta's music but did not actually have any of it and that is why I wanted a good sized collection. These songs are excellent but as is nearly always the case when buying such a large collection there is some repetition of sound but well worth the cost and I do not want to moan about having too much in one go!She is one of the those important links in the development of popular music/culture as one of those soul singers ahead of her time aka fore runner of Aretha Franklin.

If you are a fan of Etta James then this set of CD's are for you. She was at her best during her period with Chess Records bringing out such gems as "At last", "A Sunday kind of love", "Stormy weather", "I'd rather go blind" and "W.O.M.A.N." all here on this well set of produced CD's. Highly recommended.
