The chairs are named the Lazy Sue after the late mother of one of the designers, Sam Rock. He and his spouse, Keely Rock, started making the chairs passing time during distillations at their craft distillery. Some distillers pick the banjo, the Rocks tried to create the perfect chair. In order to move the chairs from just an idea to a source of income for their family, the Rocks partnered with Sam's father, Ken Rock, and mother in law, Debra Rock. Ken and Debra have a background in manufacturing. By day Sam is a lawyer and distiller and Keely a banker. Lexington, Kentucky is their home. They are also working with Sam's sister, Dr. Kendra Breiner, a veterinarian, with distribution in the midwest. These chairs are sturdy. They are made from recycled staves from old bourbon and whiskey barrels. Unlike wine barrels, whiskey barrels are charred on the inside. We sand the char enough to hold the polyurethane but no so much as to strip the character or fire branded heritage from the stave. After being sanded, they are coated with a high grade exterior polyurethane so they can live in or outdoors. We use steel brackets at the stress points. Like a baseball glove this chair can improve over time. As the seat wears with time and use, you should consider recoating it. Simply sand it lightly with a 200 grit sanding pad and then apply 1 or 2 coats of exterior polyurethane. You can purchase a quart of Helmsman SparUrethane at almost all hardware outlets. Buyer is responsible for return shipping charges incurred by seller for any reason.
