why would this be any better for cleaning a brush than soap and water?

This sanitizes and disinfects your combs and brushes. Soap only sanitizes them to a certain point. This also helps dissolve product build-up, and helps get the hair out of brushes.

What is the minimum amount of soaking time, and the maximum? The instructions don't indicate how long you should soak combs & brushes in the solution

Hi..I usually let it soak about an hour. If your brushes and combs have a lot of hairspray and hair product residue, overnight soaking would be good. Hope this helps.

Is this product gentle enough to be used on 100% boar bristle brushes? Thanks!

Yes, I use it on my boar brush and it cleans it without a problem and does not harm the bristles. I do use very warm water and let it soak for about 15 minutes and then rinse in warm water and let it air dry.
