Yes, there is a side pocket just as the picture shows. It's deep enough that we fit a full size water bottle in the pocket.

Q: Will it hold a lunchbox for my kindergartener?

Yes, it will hold a lunch box. My school age kids use this for their school books and lunch box. They are currently using them for camp. It's big enough to hold their beach towel, bathing suit, water shoes and lunch box. The bag is a good size for elementary age kids.
