Just when you think it can't get any worse
My first book by Ms. Scottoline and there have been times over the past few days where I've actually sat here, wide eyed, nerve wracked and frazzled over the goings on in this book. What starts out as an accident/mistake hybrid immediately begins to escalate and spread itself out like ripples on the surface of a once quiet lake. This novel is a brilliant fictional depiction on how not to be an outstanding parent. But things don't stop with the accident in question. Without giving out any spoilers, this story adds new meaning to "snowball out of control". The author just earned herself a new fan. Read this book.

not bad
Just started reading Lisa Scoda line again and she’s not bad not the best writer either but it’s essentially easy to read on the beach and when I’m not doing anything

Thriller with many twists
I love this book and it is typical Scottoline. I love the twists and turns that this book takes and the end is wonderful. Thanks Lisa

Wrapped up almost too neatly.
This is the second Lisa Scottoline book that I have read. I was very pleased with the first one but this slightly disappointed me. The story’s main protagonist is Jake, a financial planner, who is married to a judge and has a 16 year old son named Ryan. Jake is a well-developed character with a clear backstory. Jake and Ryan have a troubled relationship because of Jake’s past employment difficulties. Jake tries to be “fun dad” and tragedy ensues. Ryan is quite frankly an annoying whiny child. He is not really likeable and the wife is also not a sympathetic character. She is a judgmental hypocritical personality with demons of her own. The pace of the book is alright. It starts rather slowly but picks up after a few chapters. There’s no suspense for awhile but once the main characters are threatened it’s pretty much nonstop until the end. My major problem with this is that it is completely unbelievable. Jake investigates and makes inferences about his blackmailer that a layperson not involved in law enforcement probably couldn’t do as easily as he does. Also, the ending completely wraps everything up and alleviates the protagonist from almost all culpability despite the fact that he really did commit what could have been a heinous crime. I was really disappointed in the ending. If you are looking for a good suspenseful thriller, I wouldn’t recommend this. I like books that I can escape into, this book was so unbelievable that I found myself aware constantly of the blatant fiction.

Riveting Excitement and Thrills!!
I'm a casual reader - by any standard. I'm not a literary writer myself, nor do I critique books like an expert. I mostly find myself reading sci-fi books or young adult adventure stories. Even so, I hope to voice my excitement from reading this book for others like me who might be looking for a casual review, and not an academic analysis :P This was a heart-wrenching story filled with drama and intrigue, as any mystery/thriller might be. Without any spoilers, the end gives the reader as much closure as the situation would allow...so I can't say it's a happy ending, but I won't say that the ending was in anyway horrible. My point is - you'll want to read this to find out how it plays out! It plays out in an unlikely and "realistic-feeling" manner. I laughed at the final "plot-twist" that was a minor detail, but it was a good and relived kind of laugh :) What I really like about uncovering the mystery behind the drama was that the mystery wasn't about any single "big twist", but about the reactions that each character had to any of the "smaller" twists. The little twists that unfolded between chapters led to the larger reactions of the family's decision-making, and I appreciated that for this story more than anticipating a single plot-twist like "I am your father". All-in-all, I thoroughly enjoyed reading a book that was unlike my usual repertoire. You'll find all kinds of emotional grips throughout - some laughter (even some laughable situations), a lot of heartbreak warfare, and affection for the characters. So again, as a casual reader, I will casually note that at face-value, this is an exciting book well worth the read.

Actually 3 and a half stars ***
So this story was almost ludicrous. It was so far from realistic possibilities that I’d label it as ridiculous storytelling. Puh-leeze! BUT …. As with all of Scottoline’s books, yup, I kept reading and couldn’t put it down, lol. She has a way of grabbing you (no matter how absurd the story is) and you can’t let go. So go ahead and enjoy 😊
