(Where even the Vice Grips Failed) - Background: I have a 2017 Subaru Forester that, up until now, has had its oil changes performed at Subaru (car came with 2 years included maintenance). Now that those 2 years are up, I'm doing the oil changes myself. Shouldn't be a problem--I've been changing my own oil for more than 20 years. I'm no expert mechanic, but more than capable of performing an oil change. Well, the Subaru guys over-torqued the ever living crap out of the oil drain plug, and as an extra special present, left if partially rounded off for me, which I proceeded to completely round off when I attempted to remove it--credit where it's due. I tried using vice grips to remove the plug (I've had success with that method in the past), and had some good attempts (that would have been successful in removing a properly-tightened bolt), but that bolt was not moving. I was ready to take the car down the Subaru dealership in a rage and demand they fix it, but I thought I'd give this a try (after this shenanigan, I'm not too keen on the Subaru clowns touching my engine again--if they can't even torque an oil drain bolt correctly). First try was the 14mm socket remover. The socket got some good "bite," on the bolt, but it was just too far gone, and too torqued to come off, and the 14mm remover ground around the bolt. I was worried I was about to be out $35-bucks on this socket set and still no closer to getting this bolt out. Next try was the 13mm socket remover. The socket "bit" right in, and sunk down to the bolt flange. I had socket connected to a 1/2 inch drive on a 12 inch long ratchet wrench, and it took all my body weight (I was literally off the ground pulling on that thing, and I'm 6' 2" and 260 pounds! Of course, I could have applied a cheater bar to the ratchet, but let's not be reasonable), but that bolt finally came out! I couldn't believe it! They must have had that torqued at like 100+ ft-lbs! Freaking idiots! (Spec on that is probably around 30 ft-lbs). Anyways, this bolt remover set worked perfectly, and saved the day like a champ! Onto the Review: How this set works: this bolt remover set works by "biting" into the bolt as torque is applied (the bolt will NOT be reusable when you are done, but if you're looking at this set, you probably just want to get that bolt out of your life forever anyways). Inside the socket, there is some rifling (grooves) that will force the bolt farther into the socket until the bolt head is fully enveloped in the socket. Once fully enveloped, (the bolt head should "bottom out" inside the socket, and torque is applied until the bolt turns free. Once the bolt is removed, I used some vice grips to clamp onto the bolt threads and turn in the opposite direction, and the bolt should (pretty easily) come out of the socket--that was my experience at least. NOTE: This set will not work in reverse-thread applications, as the socket will be spinning with the rifling, instead of against it, and be unable to bite into the bolt. Socket quality: I don't have an air compressor (I'll get there one day), so I can't vouch for durability in an impact wrench setting, but these appear to be very well built. The metal does not appear thin or flimsy. To the contrary, they are beefy and solid. They also have a hex at the top so the can be wrenched on independent of a socket wrench. I expect these socket to stand up to repeated use just fine. Case is (typical--read: cheap) plastic tool case grade, but has holes clearly marked for size, and should still stand up pretty well to repeated use. For the price, the case could have been a bit better, but that would be my only complaint. Conclusion: this set is now a permanent resident in my tool set and has proven its mettle in battle. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Review: Worth every penny. Works like a charm! - These sockets are awesome. I had an oil plug In a disc mower with the hex head rounded off. The issue was that the plug is in a counterbored hole so I couldn’t get anything except a socket on the bolt head. I tried several methods and other bolt extractors but nothing would work. Everything just slipped and rounded the head off even more. I ordered these and they were delivered in two days, just as promised. I promptly got my ratchet and went to the barn. The bolt head was really mangled by this point and the 17mm socket I needed to use would only start on the head and not go down any further. I used a hammer and tapped it down until it bottomed out against the flange. Inserted my ratchet and pulled with both hands with everything I had. BOOM... plug breaks free and comes right out. The tapping of the socket did nothing to the grippers of the socket. Still looks brand new. Best 20 bucks I ever spent!

Worth every penny. Works like a charm!

The best sockets to remove rounded head bolts
I'm from a family of mechanics, I started wrenching when I was a kid, now that I'm and adult I'm teaching my kids how to repair mechanical problems to some our spare old cars, we used this set on a 2005 Toyota sienna to remove some damaged head bolts removing a transfer case, this Toyota is all wheel drive to repair the transfer case is a big project having to remove the front frame of the car the holding complete engine, transmission, transfer case, power steering system, is just a big project but with this set of sockets everything is easier when a bolt head gets rounded and my Snap on wrenches and sockets are not able to remove the damaged bolts this set will remove the damaged bolts real quick and easy. I have to say these sockets are great and now part of some of the best tools in my Snap on tool box!!! I'm not a mechanic, I do office work and I enjoyed teaching my two college boys how to do the repairs to our old vehicles and most of the maintenance to our properties, we do all our projects with necessary tools and these sockets are the wright tools to remove damaged head bolts. The maximum rating to this set of sockets is five stars and they deserve every one of them!!!

Actually worked, impact recommended
I tried using a speed wrench, vice grips set so tight I had to lock them with water pump pliers, a pipe wrench and an 8 point socket pounded on with a 3 lb sledge, to remove a rounded pump drain plug. All solutions attempted just made it rounder (and smaller). The next step was welding on a 3/4 nut but I was worried that the heat might do some damage of its own. I didn't want to risk getting metal debris in the system from drilling. So, what the heck, $35 for these seemed a fair shot at doing it right. I found the size that almost fit, gave it a few smacks with a hammer until it felt secure, and the put the imact gun on it. Within 3 or 4 seconds of rattling, it spun right out. Awesome! I tried a smaller size on a tractor wheel lug that has been rounded off and stuck for years. I could not get it to work at all with a ratchet or breaker bar. It just kept falling or twisting off the lug;. But everything done the same except using the impact gun, it rattled for 5 or 6 seconds then spun the lug out. The product seems a little "as seen on TV", but definitely works in the real world. The tractor lug should have been in the 90 ft/lbs range but was surely way over that before it rusted in place. One of these extractors and an air impact driver made it seem like I was removing a freshly oiled car lug. These are going in the front of the "emergency tool" drawer.
