A must-have for classroom libraries!
As we watch our government gut the Endangered Species Act, it has become vital that we help out students connect with the natural world and the plants and animals that live there. When we focus on hope we help students see the possibilities that lay before them and we show them that they can make a difference. Castaldo tells the stories of seven species headed toward extinction for different reasons, and then shows how they have been saved in different ways.Back from the Brink is a must-have book for classroom libraries. It can also be used in science and history classes, making it the perfect secondary nonfiction book.

Learn how researchers have helped save species
Back from the Brink, by Nancy F. Castaldo, is a collection of stories for older kids (10 – 12 years old) about animals that have come very close to extinction. Due to efforts from conservation researchers and passionate individuals who want to see these species survive, their populations have increased again. I recommend this book for students who are interested in conservation and learning about how researchers help save species that are on the verge of extinction.

Human intervention in nature isn't always successful. It's fascinating to read about species who are now thriving due to hard work and a love of nature. Beautiful photography keeps young minds engaged and helps create a new generation of activists.
