Parenting by God's Promises: How to Raise Children in the Covenant of Grace

Rev. Beeke has written a timeless book for families. This is my second time reading it and I believe I will read it many more times to come!

I use the word helpful carefully. I knew going into this book that there would be much to wade through in the issues I have with Calvinism. The author places much emphasis on catechisms and confessions, to a level that appears as high as God’s Word. This truly bothers me. There is the usually large amounts of quoting from Calvin and the Puritans, as well as the covenant theology they carry. The helpful part for me was the last few chapters on raising teenagers. Chapter 22 was my favorite, specializing in dealing with anger. This chapter alone brought my review from 2 to 3 stars.

Though I am a reformed Baptist and affirm different covenant theology than Dr Beeke, he writes warmly towards baptists and provides excellent, biblical instruction for Christian parents. The first part of his book is a theological foundation (with minor disagreements), and the second contains application built from that foundation. Great book.

The first part of this book develops the theology and doctrine of parenting as set forth by scripture. The last part of the book makes practical application of this theology. More than any other parenting book I've read, this one emphasizes what an honor and responsibility it is to have children and to serve them as God's representative. Love, leadership, discipline. It's all in here. Dr. Beeke's no-nonsense style clearly instructs and encourages us. I was a good mother to my children. I would have been a better one if I'd had this information when they were growing up.

I wish I’d have known about Dr. Beeke much earlier in my parenting journey! His writing is applicable and accessible, and the principles he encourages us to live by are pulled straight from Scripture. Thank you, Dr. Beeke!
