Review: The loveliest book I've ever read .... Really good print .... Book came out well... Beautifully written...my most favorite book in the world Review: J'adore les romans de Divakaruni. J'aime ce "choc des cultures" entre Inde traditionnelle et USA. Et encore une fois , j'ai été "happée" par cette histoire de secret de famille à travers 2 continents.

There are many outstanding modern writers of Indian origin - Amitav Ghosh, Vikram Seth, Rohinton Mistry, Jhumpa Lahiri, Shilpi Somaya Gowda, Arundathi Roy, Chitra Banerjee and others. While all these writers' works have common themes of lyrical storytelling, meticulous character (and sub-character) development, capturing that unique Indian emotional psyche, authentic portrayal of the immigrant experience and an enormous ease of transitioning the story across different periods and places, most of them revolve around weighty themes and are ponderous and aim to make you deeply reflective. These are immensely satisfying but in a French art movie sort of way - not in the lighter Pixar movies way (which is sharp and enjoyable but ...) I found Chitra Banerjee's Oleander Girl (as well as her earlier novels) to be enjoyable in an uncomplicated way (sort of like R.K. Narayan with a gentle twist of modernity). The story is brisk, the characters are authentic and diverse and the cultural nuances beautifully played out. This novel is certainly not like Rohinton Mistry's "A Fine Balance" or Amitav Ghosh's "Sea of Poppies" - it does not have that intensity or acuteness. Sometimes, there is a guilty pleasure in reading a uplifting, coming-of-age love story with a vibrant background without subtexts and literary gymnastics. And for that, "Oleander Girl" was an enjoyable read.

This manages to be a real page-turner and raises deeper issues too about modern India and its past. Thoroughly enjoyable .
