A tool made for the task
The Japanese Kindling Hand Axe is exactly the tool you need. The design is perfect - the axe head is balanced for effortless use. I was amazed at the performance, easy to use, perfect for making kindling.

Solid bit of kit
As soon as I opened this I took it outside and tried it out. Not the sharpest edge I have ever had out of the box but a good one none the less. Used it to trim the branches off some limbs to process them for removal. It allowed for a good solid grip with its extended beard and its geometry more than made up for its less than razor sharpness. Five minutes with a good puck and it was as sharp as I like and even better at processing wood. It is now in my SAR go kit.

Maybe for a love-boat model builder?
Over priced toothpick maker. No mass to speak of, not really sure what this is good for.

OK axe, but not a high quality build, and not the most bang for the money.
I expected a much better workmanship from Japanese Axe. The retaining L-bracket thatholds axe head to the handle (instead of the wedge) was installed as crooked as possible, theedge of the L bracket extended to the edge of the handle). I am suspecting maybethe handle was assembled locally and not at Japan. The handle felt OK but not the best handleavailable. I prefer the Fiskars Hatchet with Sheath, 14" available for about 1/2 the cost. The curved in axe head and concentrated weight at the end of the axe is good design, butworkmanship was not up to par. Fiskars are guaranteed and from my experience they replacedfaulty gears promptly directly.

Great small axe for splitting kindling
Great small axe for splitting kindling. Its sharp, has a great angle, and the blade widens at a good pace for the split. Its got a surprising good weight to it. Its not for large wood but for kindling. The bearded blade helps with contacting the wood and adds to the weight. Very pleased having started several fires with it. I would guess the blade will rust so simple maintenance would be required. Exactly what I was looking for.

Made rather goodly
Sharp straight out of the box, feels well made and has a hearty blade. Chops well.

Perfect small axe
Bought a few years ago. Have used many times at camp and on the farm. Perfect size for me

The head was not 100% secured to the handle, but with slight modification definitely worth the money
Everything about this hatchet was great except for how the head was secured, still a great buy
