How Things Work: The Inner Life of Everyday Machines Paperback – May 3, 2022

Just as the title says this incredible picture filled book shows just how many forms of everyday technology work and what they look like on the inside. Locks, clocks, and scales in detail and even a few examples of old phones, radios et cetera. I am not technology inclined, nor a watchmaker, but found this book very cool and maybe even a bit of a nostalgia trip. If you know someone who loves working on gadgets or fixing older things, they will find this a thrilling read.

I've always been interested in how things work and have been fascinated by machines with clear cases and this book doesn't disappoint, the book was packed well and arrived in good condition, I will put this next to my 4 other books by this author. lots of fun.GF

Wonderful personal narrative. Every page has something new and fascinating.

This is not five stars because there were a few inventions missing from this book of which the camera would have been a great one based on the image being reversed and mirrors being used and lenses and shutterWorks great up, down and even sideways.(This review is submitted because Amazon said they would tell me a joke. Im a sucker for jokes).

Maybe you have to be a true nerd to love this book -- but love it I do: subtle and wonderful insights on every page. Couldn't put it down. You'll learn stuff you never imagined, about locks and clocks, weighing scales and weaving machines, and many other wickedly clever creations of the human mind. And Theo is there with you, with his curiosity, wisdom, and wry sense of humor.

When I bought this book, I hoped it would be as popular as the rest of Theodore grays work with my kindergarten through eighth grade students. I’ve only had it in school for two days but it’s never been left on opened and unread and that whole time kids have been writing down the title, take it home and ask for it for Christmas at least six times in two days.We all love this book, my middle school students have asked if they can do a weeks art project around this very book. The debate has been hot, which page to devise an art project for, or about. It’s a beautiful book, I guess it’s not for everybody but for me? I’m 1000% pleased

This is a wonderful book and it arrived in perfect shape! It’s important to me to have books and their covers arrive unmarred.

Only real problem is that mine came damaged with wrinkled front and edges of some pages bent. I didn't think it was worth going through the trouble of returning. Might blow dry it or heat to try to straightened.

For once, I think the Kindle version may be better than the hard copy. The photographs from Mann are of such high quality and resolution, even at high levels of “zoom” the detail & clarity is stunning. Grey’s insightful explanations often detail old concepts from new perspectives. Worth every penny!

I bought this book as a potential Christmas gift for an acquaintance. After perusing the first few pages of this exquisite book, I have to keep it for myself. The gorgeous photographs and intelligent prose will be appreciated by any reader who likes to be amazed and entertained. Highly recommended!
