Eat Wheat: A Scientific and Clinically-Proven Approach to Safely Bringing Wheat and Dairy Back Into Your Diet

Very helpful book
I have been following Dr. John Douillard for some time now and admire his philosophy of doing things through diet and living more naturally rather than taking pills forever. I've been studying and reading about natural health for nearly thirty years, and he is one of the most generous people on the internet in terms of giving free information through his website. I admit Ayurveda was something I never investigated until I found him, and I have been impressed overall with how much wisdom it has to share about health.Over the years, I have proceeded through the study of nutrition and herbs and supplements to energy modalities like tai chi and reiki and intuitive methods like dowsing. My two degrees in Biology made it easier for me to read about health and then take action to create the health I want. As a result, I am healthier now at age 67 than I ever was. I am also an author and have written about health, so I have pretty high standards and a picture of what I want when I buy a book.As an author, I have also seen how unfair the review system seems to be and how often people give 1-star ratings for the wrong reason, and I know how important having higher than a 4-star average is. Amazon does not explain what each rating means (they used to), so it's a free-for-all sort of system, and as a result, it is confusing and chaotic. Even Amazon says 1- 2- and 3- stars are negative ratings. So the only positive ones are 4- and 5-stars, which means 4 stars is kind of bleh. I wish they'd go back to 3-stars being neutral, but my vote doesn't count.Anyway, this is to explain why I gave this book 5 stars even though it is true that it could have been written and edited a little better. I gave it that rating based on the overall value I think the book offers, the truth it provides and the impact it has had on my outlook and soon, on my health and health goals. It isn't a perfect book; it's just an excellent one that does indeed accomplish what it sets out to do.The important point he makes, regardless of whether you want to quibble about his facts, is that the wave of gluten intolerance is far more complex than we realize; that removing gluten is a false and nonpermanent fix; that we are designed to tolerate a reasonable amount of healthy, natural grain; that we need to address root causes like toxicity and digestive issues rather than stay forever on a gluten-free diet. This is so true. I was married to a celiac man, and I was gluten-free as a result for the eight years of our marriage. It never did much for my health, but he had to do that according to doctors. I got much better results with fixing my digestion, which was a mess, when I went organic and started repairing my gut and microbiome. Dr. Douillard does a reasonable job of presenting scientific data for his point of view, but we all need to bear in mind that science is so incomplete on this and every topic, that you can't just go by this study or that study.I think Dr. John gets a big piece of the puzzle right, but we don't know enough to see the whole picture at this time. So Dr. Perlmutter has some of the right of it, too. It isn't either/or. It's like the blind men and the elephant. You as a reader must understand the limitations of science at this time and try to find the nuggets that make the most sense for your goals and give it a try. I also have read Grain Brain and agree with some of what it puts forth. But in a sense, they are both right. Which means you have to figure for yourself how that can be...but that's how it is when science only knows 5% of what it needs to know on any topic.I don't get the sense that his understanding of evolutionary theory about diet is anywhere near complete. I'm not sure I agree with his concept that 10,000 years is long enough to give established adaptations, when we usually address such things in geologic time, which is much longer. But that's just nitpicking, and I prefer not to argue about things that don't materially change his conclusions. I think he's right. We need to restore balance and health to our digestive system and see it as more complex than we once did. We need to avoid toxins and detox regularly. If you agree with that outlook, you will probably find some great nuggets in this book that help you get to the next level in your healing process. I know I did. And that makes it worth 5 stars to me.

Easy to Understand, Informative, Hopeful
I follow Dr. Douillard via his emails, and have bought a few of his products (can't say enough about the Beet Root for gallbladder/liver) but haven't ever really taken any of his health plans seriously. They seemed too complicated or restrictive. But since I was able to get an inexpensive copy of this book for my Kindle, I thought, "why not?"I haven't been able to eat soy or wheat for about a decade and lately I have been wondering if something else is bothering my system but hadn't yet nailed down what. I am three week into a no dairy test and I don't really notice any difference. Growing ever more frustrated with limited food options I wanted to find a way to heal my body. This book may just be the ticket.I am only half done with the book but I already know it is going to help me. I keep a notebook beside me as I read and jot down important points and dietary and supplement recommendations. I have already scoped out some ingredients on Amazon (and added them to my wish list) and just this afternoon I made ghee for the very first time.Once I have completed the book and have a better idea of the full plan, I plan on starting to heal based on this book's recommendations. Maybe this year, for the first time in over a decade, I can enjoy a croissant on Christmas morning.Update:I followed a 6 week plan that I created based the information in his book, adding one or two new things at a time to keep it all from seeming overwhelming and also to allow my body to adapt a little more slowly. My digestion does feel a little better. I was traveling a couple of weeks ago and ate dairy and a little wheat (highly processed yucky stuff) and did fine. I ate some 16 grain (healthy) bread last weekend with some raw milk cheese along with a little wheat at Thanksgiving. No digestive issues but I did get canker sores in my mouth (one of my "wheat" reactions) but I did not get a skin rash (another of my wheat reactions). I don't think I am going to be able to add wheat back into my diet because of this.I am regularly drinking fenugreek tea with a drop or two of fennel oil. I also have been keeping the slipper elm, marshmallow and licorice tea in my diet (I do not boil it to concentrate it). I have always liked roasted dandelion root tea and continue to enjoy that. The hardest parts for me? Eating three meals a day and no snacks. I can't eat a lot at one time (must have a small stomach) and therefore can't eat enough to make it from one meal to the next without eating something in between. I am trying. The other hard part? The sleep schedule. I have always been a night owl (even as a small child) and I don't see myself ever changing that. I do get about 8 hours of sleep per night. One thing I am trying to do is to not eat for 13 hours overnight. In all honestly. I think Dr. Douillard has the holy grail to fix the majority of American's digestive issues. Even if you can't follow his program 100%, if you do the healing suggestions, most of the maintenance suggestions and do your best with seasonal eating, 3 meals a day and getting better sleep you will be doing yourself (and your body) a huge favor.

Great for those seeking digestive knowledge and help.
This is a great book for anyone who has struggled with eating wheat and have digestive problems. Its a knowledgeable and good read for anyone who finds that some books on this topic can be too heavily complicated and full of jargon. I follow Dr. John's through his emails and website and have participated in a retreat and cleanse. I feel comfortable with the knowledge he puts forward and trust that he wants to help people move toward a life not dependent on supplements and powders but on our natural ability to digest healthy whole foods. Thanks so much for this wonderful book Dr. John!!
