Learning scales CAN be fun
This scale book presents the scale in one octave (book 1 presented 5 finger scales) . However this book is not just a listing of scales to play. It gives you the scale to learn up the keyboard and down first hands separate then together plus going in contrary movement. The chords for each scale are also taught. What sets these books apart from other scale books are the challenges given for each of the scales. Not only does it help reinforce the scale you are working on but has you transpose the challenge to all the other scales you have been taught. By the time you work your way through these scale books...you WILL know your scales (on octave).I am teaching myself piano and when I decided to learn the scales I started with The First Book of Scales, Chords, Arpeggios & Cadences (Alfred's Basic Piano Library) by Palmer. This is an excellent book BUT it presents the scales in 2 octaves. I was not anywhere near ready for the moving my hands in such a way. I needed to be spoon fed the scales...Faber's Scale books are perfect for this. Taking you from 5 finger scales (bk 1) to octave scales (bk 2) so you are ready to begin the Palmer book.

Full of information even at the intermediate level
I like this scale book a lot. It has a lot of information beyond basic scales. I like the presentation format and great variety of exercises. Recommend.

Best Scale Book
Has practical exercises to reinforce the ability to play in different keys in addition to all scales and chord progressions and arpeggios. Transposing challenges were surprisingly accessible and very useful. This is the most comprehensive and effective scale book I’ve found. I use it myself to rebuild my skills and will definitely use for all my piano students as they progress.

Should be in every music teachers library!
So concise, fun and perfect to keep my piano students on top of their theory as well as their practice. This book is great for beginners as well as adults. I recommend it every time I get a piano student!

I love it, EXCEPT....
This book has a wonderful lay out of scales working hands separate, hands together, parallel motion, contrary motion, ending in chords and a challenge section. Each page also has metronome markings to work up speed and often has a section where you are asked to transpose to a different key. All of this is wonderful and I would give a rave review except for the fact that in the chord section they use the V7 chord with the 5th in the left hand instead of the 3rd. It may seem silly to even comment on such a small thing, but the Faber book 1 teaches the V7 chord with the 3rd so it is inconsistent with what has already been taught, they use the V7 chord with the 3rd in the right hand so the hands don't even have similar positions, and most of all, the V7 chord with a fifth is hardly ever used in standard repertoire. Why make something difficult when it should be a natural, logical progression from what they have already learned? As a teacher, I know that that chord will be where my students will make a mistake, and so as a teacher do I let it slide because Faber has created this unnecessary nuisance? Or do I make an issue of it because it's not being played correctly and a student really should play accurately and be reading their notes? I wish Faber just hadn't made it an issue.

Fun and Rewarding Instruction
It is really nice to have all the scales and chords in one book and this one is superb. The Farber line of piano instruction is an excellent tool for learning to play piano especially if you have a teacher. The Books are easy to follow and you learn small pieces fast, so there is satisfaction immediately so is fun. It is a lifetime of learning and so exciting and fun (it always has to be fun) to be able to make music and these instructions books make it so.
