Plein Air Painting with Oils: A practical & inspirational guide to painting outdoors

I enjoyed this book so much. Im fascinated with Haidee-Jo’s ability to say so much with so few strokes, so I really enjoyed a glimpse into her techniques.

I learned so much from Haidee Jo Summers's first and eagerly awaited the release of this one - and I was rewarded with another brilliantly written and illustrated book. If you are interested in oil painting and/or plein air painting, this is the book to buy!

For anyone who is interested in painting outside, this book is a 'must have'! Love this book! Full of practical insights and valuable information!! It answers so many of my questions about the fast pace ever changing plein air painting process. It was written with clear instructions and honest opinions. I appreciate the artist/writer for being so true to her words and her work! ❤️

This practical and inspirational guide to plein-air painting has helped me get the courage and inspiration to go outside often and paint without fear. I highly recommend it.

Really helpful, good purchase.

This book will not be useful if you have been painting outside before. Also note that her choice of pigments is not archival (for example she uses zinc white and alizarin crimson - both pigments are no longer recommended). Her method for making panels yourself should not to be followed as it will result in the MDF chemicals leaching through the gesso over time. The images and her paintings are nice but the advice is too generic. From pages 32-52, there are multiple demos that do not show the reference pictures, this makes it hard to understand her method of seeing. I spotted several typos. Also there are some English expressions I couldn’t quite understand like ‘screw your eyes up’? I’ve read most of the book in the hopes I would learn something new and nothing so far, I wanted to give it a chance but I will not keep it.

Read this book cover to cover and really enjoyed all the information. Found it very motivating and useful.

What a well thought out book ! I bought this for my sister , who is the painter in the family, and read it myself ! So clear and down to earth with instructions you can follow . Might jus5 have to take up painting myself now !

I liked the motivational timed pieces.These studies of small paintings are particularly encouraging for beginners.

If you have no idea about painting with oils it could be a bit daunting .but its great for first time out side painting .gives you confidence.
