This book is ideal as a graduate or advanced undergraduate primer to numerical methods for engineering applications. It builds up from the basics of interpolation, differencing and quadrature and goes on to devote a significant part of the book to ODE and PDE solvers. The organization is brilliant, and the focus is on the methods rather than numbers. Bulk of the material in each method is devoted to accuracy and stability, and if rigorously worked through, this book can provide a very intuitive sense into the formulation and behavior of each method. A wide range of methods are covered, and all issues that may arise upon pretty much any numerical problem is discussed in detail.The huge collection of excellent exercises is another outstanding feature; there are problems from every field in engineering and physics and require quite some effort to code and verify, which again helps master the solvers. Solved examples are adequate, and codes for the solved ones are available online.The final chapter on spectral methods could have been a bit more elaborate, but still the author manages to convey a good review of discrete Fourier and Chebyshev transforms. An introduction to FEM as a continuation of spectral methods ends the book, but this part provides not more than a closure to the rest of the content presented.

This book is very good because it introduces numerical methods and shows how to develop them in a very simple way. For me, the only problem is that all the examples presented are in MATLAB. Fortunately, the Openeering team has translated from MATLAB to Scilab all the examples presented into this book.By downloading the Scilab code from the Openeering website, now we are free to learn about engineering numerical analysis, following the entire book without paying for a commercial software license.You can download the Scilab code for free from the Openeering website.

I bought it because I needed it for my class. Otherwise I do not think this is a great book. It is ok, it has a lot of excercises and is clear and concise. On the other hand the edition is not pretty and the amount of content is not enough to justify its price.

Moin offers a first course in numerical analysis. Mostly directed at engineering students who have some computer programming background. Though extensive experience in this is not needed.Naturally, there is an emphasis on solving differential and integral equations. So old favourites like Runge-Kutta and trapezoidal means make their appearance for the latter, for example. There is also a more advanced treatment of how to tackle partial differential equations.The problem sets are a good feature of the book. Some may take considerable time to code and debug, but hopefully will help you gain insight into what the author is explaining.
