Wonderful overview of Adams' career
I've been a Robert Adams fan for many years, and have several of his other photo books. This one was published to accompany his massive retrospective held Summer-Fall 2022 at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC (which mounted a similar retrospective and book for Sally Mann several years ago). The scope and quality of both the photos and commentary here are very good indeed.

Buy it for the essay
As a photo book collector, I usually buy books for the pictures. This one, the pictures are mostly familiar--a credible compilation of Adam's work over 5 decades--but the real new material is the essay by Sarah Greenough, discussing the motivation behind Adam's work. Like much of Adam's writing, the essay is not easy to digest (I'm reading it for the third time) but it does help understand many of his pictures.

An excellent compendium of Rlight Robert Adams's work
Compiled by one of the best American photo curators (Sarah Greenough of the National Gallery of Art [Washington DC]) this catalogue/book of Robert Adams's work is a must have in any serious library, including personal ones. The meaningful selection of well-reproduced BW photographs is accompanied by various in-depth texts about their author.

mixed Bag: Good survey of Adams, but odd printing/presentation choices.
I won't comment on the written material presented in the book---I haven't read it yet.I will comment on the presentation and printing of the photos. Tonally, the photos seem to be adequately reproduced on a very bright white matte TEXTURED (!) stock. The pages of this book are a textured matte paper. The slight translucence of the pages means that you'll sometimes see shadows of the photo that's on the underlying page when looking at the photos. The photos are sized fairly small on each page small, which is disappointing, since a substantial amount of space, which could have been devoted to each photo, is wasted in the huge empty white borders.

A stunning book
American Silence is a beautifully printed book by Aperture. I have most of Robert Adams' books and this one is really beautiful and a wonderful addition to my collection of books. The text is excellent and like many of Aperture's books, the printing is superb.

One of the finest exhibitions of photography that has ever been presented at the national gallery
As someone living in Northern Colorado, I have been aware of Adams work from his books for many years but found them ordinary, familiar, unremarkable. The exhibition at the National Gallery, however , was brilliant and made me reconsider everything I had ever thought about the man and his work. In part it was the excellent lighting and selection at the museum , but I think it had more to do with the experience of seeing the original prints and the arrangement, sequencing and commentary included in the exhibit. This well-produced book is about as close as you can get to that extraordinary exhibit, liken it to a postcard of a painting. But it is an essential book in American photography, every bit as essential as The Americans.

Dull
I did not realize that he was such a bad photographer. Dull dull dull. Absolutely nothing of interest here. This really is a case of “my five year old could do that”. About as exciting as catalogs for eavestroughing. Wish I had never bought it. Off to the bottom shelf where it will collect dust, untouched for years to come.

Impressive
Excellent presentation and format. Attractive hard bound book. Big selection of photographs from one of the great photographers who avoided pretentiousness and hinted at a mix of clarity and the depth therein.

Excelente trabajo.
