Disappointed but fascinated
Having already read a few of the Isaac Bell series, and his character being one of my favourites of Cussler's, I was really looking forward to reading this with it being first in the series. But was a little disappointed, having still enjoyed the book. I am probably being somewhat harsh as the author is only just introducing the character to his readers for the first time. Maybe should have read it first and wouldn't have been disappointed! So don't let this put you off, as Isaac Bell sure does get better. As always with Clive's books you get to learn more new and fascinating facts from our history and told with excitement and flair from one of my favourite authors! Any fans of historical fiction should enjoy this book.

Half thriller - half guidebook
This novel tells the story of detective Isaac Ball's efforts to capture a notorious bank robber. Set at the turn of the century this is something of a departure from Cussler's normal output but still delivers a good dose of motorised excitement. What let's the book down somewhat is that large chunks of guidebook like prose are regularly shoved in the text, for instance when Bell checks into the hotel we get a paragraph describing when the hotel was built, who by and in what style. It's very distracting and I felt it spoilt the flow of the book.My other major concern is around the conclusion of the book where several acts of nature play a major role. It felt as though Cussler couldn't quite work out how to tie things up and so reached for the old 'deus ex machina' to tidy things up.A fun ride but I don't feel any great desire to join Bell for any of his further adventures.

very readable
Have just finished my first Bell story and found it very readable. Typical CC , action, twists and will start on the second Bell story soon.....

Fun and high-octane—highly recommended!
A very fun and high-octane book from Cussler, with the historical setting amongst all the mystery making it all the more interesting. Highly recommended!

Good tale
As usual Clive Cussler has written another ‘escapist novel’. A good read with a number of twists and turns
