Phone separation alert is unique and invaluable.
There are many bluetooth finder tags for sale, but I was looking for one that would sound out on the tag AND also sound a simultaneous alert on my phone when becoming separated .This way I could only possibly lose my phone was I to lose the keys and phone at the same time, giving a great deal of loss protection for your actual phone as well as any tagged item..Whilst the loss of keys (for example) is major hassle the loss of your phone would be far more distressing or expensive. This tag (I realised) can save you from that...The tag can be placed on any item really but does lend itself well to keys, keys being invariably carried everywhere the same as your phone.A wallet, purse or item of hand luggage might also be a good choice in using the tag as a separation alet..The tag is trackable on your phone whether seperation alert is set or not in the app, which shows the tags' last known exact mapped position. If within the 70m bluetooth range this will obviously show the real time position, and a button can be pressed on either the phone app or tag itself to make one or the other loudly alarm. Walls do diminish the 70m distance as always with bluetooth. If the tag or phone become beyond bluetooth range, the last point at which the tag was recorded is viewable on the app (of course with the full separation alert on, this event becomes a bit less likely). As long as the tag is attached to something that is not moving (or left on a moving bus or train), you can always go back to to see if it is still where the mapping said you left it.Should someone wander off with your tagged item after losing it (as in theft or taking with the intention of finding a rightful owner) , then there is also the Spotypal community function. This works by the app informing you of your tags current position should any other person carrying a Spotypal tag come within range of it.This of course depends on several factors..1) Enough other people buying the device.2) The tag battery remaining alive long enough for this to happen.3) The tag not being exposed to damp for too long (as it is only water resistant)..All in all I would guess this feature will be of limited use and effectiveness should the tag remain less popular.I believe it would be well worth the manufacturer also making the tag waterproof (especially for UK use given our constantly wet weather). The manufacturer suggests using it as a lost pet finder too, although this will have limited use with pets liable to run off beyond the 70 metre range (the indoor range also being much reduced due to walls).I can only think of this being a useful feature for a tortoise, for example, but again remember that it is not waterproof...I would guess attaching it to a runaway or escapee dog might be pretty much a waste of time, apart from the possibility of the community feature discussed above being triggered at a later time. The tag is used in conjunction with a free app on Google Play, but it is important to set the item up properly with your phone. Although the instructions are simple, they don't really tell you how to stop the phone from shutting down the app or it being closed via the "close all apps" function (as the app being closed either automatically or by error renders it useless). This can be done on most phones by adjusting settings to allow the app to always stay open in the background, but may not be enough without "locking" the app open..This is done on Samsung as below:1) Open the Spotypal app and press the square symbol button which will dismiss it from view but still keep it open in the background.2) Now press the "view all apps" button, which looks a bit like an "=" sign. The Spotypal app will then appear as a slightly minimised app within the screen, with the usual option to "close all"..Do not close it, but instead press the three vertical dots at the top right corner of the screen and select "lock apps", which will cause a tiny open padlock to appear in the top right of the actual app.. This should be touched once, which will cause it to change into a closed lock. The app can then be swept away (or closed via the "close all" function), yet in reality always stay fully open regardless.. A little icon will then always remain in the notification window too, which is a useful and reassuring confirmation. Please be aware that many events can unlock and close the app despite this being done, including restarting the phone, any system update or even restarting after your phone after a recharge following a low power shutdown. You soon get used to checking the little Spotify logo is always present in the upper notification panel of your phone, however.Ok.. enough said about that lot.. What about the separation alert? This can be set up in three ways in the app..1) Alert phone and tag on separation..2) Alert tag only..3) Alert phone only..Setting both to sound out should separation occur (which seems of maximum benefit to an item like keys) is as stated really useful as both your phone and keys get some loss/seperation protection.A phone is an expensive item, and lose a phone during a phone contract then the monthly payments you will still have to make might seem a little depressing).. This tag, whilst not completely foolproof (imagine losing both the tagged item and your phone together somewhere) is also a lot cheaper than phone loss or theft insurance...I have to admit there was a compatibility issue with my Samsung S8 phone, which manifested itself as the separation alert would not play out on the phone.. but do not be put off..I contacted the help team via the app and they responded in two hours (no joke) saying that their technicians had tested the app on the S8 and indeed found a bug. They stated that this would be corrected in a new app update that they would make generally available from Google Play in 2 days. They messaged me again 2 days later to tell me the update was ready to download and had been extensively and successfully tested on the S8, but urged me to re contact with any futher issues. It now works perfectly on my phone :)..Amazing tech support for a newish product, which is understandable really..To give you an idea of how good it is, I sometimes wander off with my phone and not my keys. It works consistently, and works very well... This conditions you to learn to always carry your keys around with your phone, which is obviously what you want in protecting both items. To conclude, the phone alert is unique as goes this type of device, and to me makes it a far better tag than the rest on offer. The product support is also quite excellent, which gives some confidence that with app development the product and its useability will become better given time...I love it :)Ps: The review stating that the seperation alert goes off even when both your phone and your tag are carried on your person is not my experience at all... I think it's far more likely that this reviewer had compressed the button on the tag which would have sounded out his/her phone... and it does happen a lot in a tight jeans pocket (for example). This can be overcome by changing the tag button "call phone" command (in the app) to a quick double press instead of single.UPDATE 23/1/19:Used extensively now and only one issue which confirms the previous review that the device does give false mobile phone/device separation on occasion (even when carried together). I put this down to the fact that I had set the alert delay in the app settings to zero (0) seconds, which I reasoned would mean it alerting the very moment it falsely sensed a separation. It is very tempting to set the delay to zero, as it of course means that you will be alerted when you are at the closest point possible to your "lost" device.I therefore set the seperation alert lapse back to it's default 30 seconds, and am happy to say it has not falsely alarmed a "seperation" since. This is obviously due to that although it may falsely sense a separation, there are 30 seconds (not zero) for the device to re-establish the bluetooth link (and thus not give the alert)..I guess the manufacturers knew this, which was why the alert is defaulted at 30 seconds. The device gives me no problems at all now apart from me wandering off without one or the other on seperation, which is annoying but all my own fault and which does prove how reliable the device is.Yes.. it is a very good piece of kit indeed :)
