How do you set the calendar date?

Pull dial all the way out push half way back in turn dial forward to set date

what is the battery number?

Not sure, but I would think that it takes a typical flat round watch battery. I bought a pack of variety flat round batteries at the Dollar store. Usually works on my other watches. Watch is nice for the price.

Is the luminosity constant as with a tritium dial, or does it need light to work as with glow in the dark?

"It needs light to work -- " not very satisfactory. It's a cheap watch, One should never have high expectations of a cheap watch! But it worked fine -- for awhile. I had to replace it (with another cheap watch, I got two of the same versions.)

To replace a battery does the back pop off or screw off?

I do not replace the battery. At this price, I just order a new watch. It is cheaper
