Sweet spot
Does its job. I picked this one because if you unleash the steel, its hole is big enough for the rod to fit through. For precise placement of sparks, it sometimes works better to hold steel still (right over where the spark needs to go) and pull ferrocerium toward you. I thought that might work better with more surface: a round rod inside a round opening with a sharp edge. However, it's not much more contact, not much more precision, and requires better coordination because both angles have to be just right. Using a straight edge the normal way is easier and works at least as well, no untying needed. So, what's special? Just the right size: both pieces are large enough to hold onto and throw fat sparks, small enough to tuck into my Pocket Rocket case. It's easy to find huge, heavy rods, and spindly, short rods for sale. Those have their place, but for constant carry Goldilocks says this set is just right.

Very good deal for the money!
Got this for my earthquake preparedness bag. It works very well, even for a novice like me. It's easy to strike and produces a good amount of sparks. The sparks make an angle of about 90 degrees from strike point, so make sure you get close to your tinder for maximum effectiveness. Some other brands have a handle or plastic holder for the striker. This Schrade doesn't, but the striker is long enough that I haven't had an issue with my finger rubbing against the rod on the downstroke. It also fires up when I use my Mora Bushcraft knife, which has a 90 degree spline for uses such as this. If the rod were just a little longer it would be perfect, but this is a great tool nonetheless.

well worth the small cost.
I bought this little ferro rod and striker simply to help me get free shipping on an item I needed. When I received it several days later I was genuinely surprised at how effective it was compared to several larger ferro rods I normally use. I can throw a cascade of sparks with this little jewel as easily as with my larger rods and the solid eighth inch thick steel striker is one of the best I have ever used. The small size of this little rod is nothing but an asset you can count on. I highly recommend this striker to anyone who knows how to use one or is willing to learn. JB.

Great little ferro rod throws lots of sparks - good for survival kits
Since I bought my Schf51 &f52 (which both come with these ferro rods) I have been putting one of these on each of my mid to large size knives. Even though these rods are small (2.5 inches long minus handle) they are good secondary ferro rods that will throw a good shower of sparks. These are softer than my other ferro rods which is why they throw sparks so well. Also I have used the striker and find it large enough and the edges sharp enough to throw sparks easily. These rods works great in survival kits or bug out bags.

Awesome fire starter
I like this hero rod because it’s easy to strike, and I can light a cotton ball in one strike. It is an awesome product. My favorite thing about it is that it makes very large sparks. Ours is a little different than the one pictured: there’s a handle on the striker but not on the rod. Still works great though.

Works great. Does what it is supposed to do.
I ordered this Ferro Rod along with a Husqvarna 13" hatchet, so I only paid $5.97 for it and no shipping fees. I've never used a Ferro Rod before and all I can say is that this thing works great. I rubbed some vaseline on a cotton ball and struck the rod 2 or 3 times with the side of the striker and presto! I had a fire going. The rod may be a little smaller than some experienced users may prefer, but it packs nicely into my backpack and does what it is supposed to do. It appears to be solidly put together. The striker is nice and thick and very easy to hold onto as is the little plastic handle on the Ferro Rod. For six bucks how can you go wrong? If you prefer a larger rod look at the SCHFS2. It is the larger version of this one. I think I may look into purchasing a knife sheath with a ferro rod holder on it and keep my knife and the rod together in one package.

Great product!
This product works very well. It throws an ample barrage of sparks with it's attached striker. I was looking for a reasonably-priced firesteel that would economically fit into the side sheath of my Becker BK7 without hogging up room that I needed for other tools to be placed in it. It just made sense to purchase this item, as the dimensions for it are 2 1/2 " by 1/4 " ferro material, plus the 1 1/2 " plastic holder, for a grand total length of 4 inches. This total length makes it very easy to hang onto, particularly if your hands are cold and consequently less nimble. If you need something that works well for such application, I highly recommend the Schrade SCHFS1.
