No, as they are promoting the smart vinyl, but definitely need a mat

Can you use "ordinary" heat press vinyl, and, if so, would it cut without a mat?

Yes you can use any brand of vinyl but results are not guaranteed. All materials that are not Cricut Smart materials should be used with a mat

Yes I use my laptop amazon kindle and my Samsung phone as the machine is bluetooth

Yes 12 month warranty don't know about malfunction but if faulty you can return it
