Still working on the technique. I have to exert a little downward pressure on the top and drop the ball twice to get a cut around most of the circumference, don't move it between drops, then you can take a spoon and lift the top of the egg off pretty well. If I am not putting any downward pressure on it then it does not seem to score the eggs. The topper was left in water for a short time while I was doing dishes and the inside of the ball started to rust, there is also a little rust between the rod and the cutter dome that I cant seem to get off, my bad I guess. The topper is beautiful to look at. It does the job I just need more practice or different eggs. So, practice, practice, practice, wipe it off instead of immersing it in water, and if you have company make extra eggs.

Works well, but packaging was odd
I bought this as a gift. It's decent and solidly made, not flimsy at all.We tested it out right away, so I can confirm that it works! You position the egg in the saucer part as shown in the photo, fit the bottom/cup part of the other piece to the top of the egg, slide the metal ball up to the top and then release -- and the top of the egg is perfectly cut open. The only weird thing I would point out is the packaging. This arrived in pretty standard form-fitted heavy duty plastic, but the cardboard insert where normally some graphics or company name, etc would be was completely blank. I think the weird packaging was the only thing that gave away the low price on this item.

Nice, clean cuts
I bought this for a dinner party to make something called an "Arpege Egg." It's an egg dish served in a 3-star Parisian restaurant. I have made this dish many times, but previously I had simply used a paring knife to remove the top of the egg. This always resulted in ugly, jagged-looking edges. This egg topper works as advertised. Nice, clean cuts. It was delivered quickly, too. It's a fairly simple impact-type device, so I don't think I need to flesh out this review too much. It just works. The only thing I'd suggest is that you buy a carton of eggs to practice on. It takes a little learning to figure out how high to lift the weight before dropping it. I did waste a couple eggs this way.

Neat kitchen gadget
The jury is still out on this device, but I think with time and practice, it will become a regular at the breakfast table. The first few tries by any one person seem to result in some kind of failure, be it, smashing the top of the egg, or just not getting a good scoring around the top of the egg. We really like kitchen gadgets, so for us this was a must have and we will continue to use it for soft boiled eggs.

My eggs have super powers!
Simply does not work for me and my Arizona organic brown large eggs.I put it on crown of the egg, lifted the weight, let the weight go, and... and... the egg shell is completely intact. If i attempt to cut at the slight score the device made with a knife - the shell on both sides of the score mark cracks (making for a very messy soft boiled egg). If I attempt a second drop from the top - the shell cracks (with messy results for soft boiled egg). If I attempt a second drop from 3/4 up - egg shell cracks (messy soft boiled egg). If I attempt a second drop from 1/2 way up - nothing. I guess the chickens here in Arizona aren't compatible with this contraption. I'll be sticking with a sharp knife making an X at the top of my soft boiled eggs and pealing back with a spoon - thanks for nothing.

Needs written instructions.
Product arrived with absolutely no instructions or usage suggestions. Fortunately, many reviewers made some information available that helped us get started. Works pretty well most of the time. Egg size and shell thickness varies the success rate. Qualify of construction seems very good.

Not totally impressed with the hype of the product but it may be that I just need practice in using it. It certainly works much better than whacking it with a spoon as I was used to. No shells in my egg. That is a plus.

it works pretty well I guess
this is the first egg cracker I've ever purchased, it works pretty well I guess... at least on the second egg I was more proficient at it:) I do like the egg cup that comes with it, that is a plus.
