Will the switch on it still work in extremely cold temperature without becoming inoperable, such as, in the vacuum of empty space?

Attempts to destroy this toy have proven to be futile. Once invited into the home, it will never (EVER) stop singing. While it has been reported by some that sound waves cannot travel through the vacuum of space, I assure you, the obnoxious chipper little songs will continue to penetrate your ear drums. The "loud" setting on the switch my be rendered inoperable in cold temperatures, but the fail-safe "louder" setting will keep chugging along. The flashlight function will have given out long before its first use.

Is it too bright for a one yearold

It is bright yes, but mine (1 and a 2 year old) do not stare at it to long. It's fun to play with on the wall and such. The 2 year old is more interested in using it as a bat.
