Motherwell Hardcover – April 5, 2016

I strongly recommend this volume for people who have an affinity for the work of Robert Motherwell. He was a great artist/philosopher who sought fundamental truth in his work. Although his open series (covered in this volume) may appear quite simple to many people, the work, like that of Mark Rothko, urges the viewer to engage in a conversation--one that is meditative and catalytic as the same time. This volume covers early work, collages, as well as the Spanish Elegy and Open series. Although it does not cover every work, it hits many of the major high points in Motherwell's career. I keep it close by in my art studio.

I've been waiting for a great book on Robert Motherwell that was affordable and this is it. Covers his whole brilliant career. His work stands out as some of the best abstract art ever made.

A must-have book for any one interested in post-war art, abstract expressionism and the creative lives of Motherwell-Frankenthaler. The production is gracefully done and very rich in content.

Love this book. A bit pricey, but it covers his whole career. This and the Collages book are all you need.

Amazing book. Beautiful and plentiful color illustrations. Waited almost a year for this book. Not disapointed!

A must have

This book is a revelation. I had to wait for another printing as it had reached scalper's prices, but here we are. It is organised thematically so follows Motherwell through collage, the odes, open series etc with specialist essays on each area. Motherwell's work is for me a paradox, though I find his methods and practice highly interesting, with such a strong element of reasoning. The book has some fold out plates, and is designed with such care and skill that it has quickly become a cherished book. If you find this still affordable, buy it, and revel in the days of high art. I read it in bed, with a book cushion between it and my chest, but other safer methods are available!
