what's a compatible replacement cable for this headset that does not have the inline mic?

The HD 400S uses the same "bayonet" type click and lock system as the HD 5XX Series products. Replacement cables, with and without an in line mic are available. There are many aftermarket options available on Amazon.com.

How big are the ear cups (inside diameter please ...if you can)?

At its' widest point, it is as long as my index finger across. This is -not- your typical "over-ear" headphones and is more of an in-between. It's not fully ON EAR and it's not fully OVER EAR. At first I was disappointed, but it's actually really comfortable. I forget I'm wearing it, sometimes.

Do these have a lot of bass? I don’t want a lot of bass. I want a nice clean smooth sound.

No, it doesn't have a lot of bass. It focuses on strong mids and clear highs. Acoustic and/or synthesized (electronic, atmospheric music, etc.) sounds come through really well.

The one button remote controls volume too?

It technically does, but it requires you to double/triple tap and then hold on the last tap. I have a lot of trouble double/triple tapping fast enough for it to register as something other than pause/play.
