But any fight that involves the big bad is a masterpiece
A very interesting, if uneven, movie.Half the fight scenes (the group ones) are silly and uninspiring, fillers basically. But any fight that involves the big bad is a masterpiece. The choreography is flawless. I loved the parts when White Lotus simply danced around, avoiding the hero's punches with such ease and grace, yet with a smirk. He's one of the more interesting villains from the era.As usual, the hero motivations are kind of vague, and the movie ends the second the final fight is over. Who could be bothered with any kind of a wrap up to tie up the non-existent story-lines.The good guy is also kind of a jerk. His treatment of the obligatory comic relief is downright mean, and very disrespectful of a guy who gives up everything he has at a drop of a hat to help his friends, and saves his life twice. But, he's scrawny, balding and geeky, so go ahead and pour constant abuse on the guy.As far as the training sequences go, this is some of most beautiful work I've seen Gordon Liu perform. Especially his mastery of "woman's" kung-fu is graceful, funny, yet powerful. The inexplicably unexpected full frontal nudity shot of White Lotus is just "what?"

Fun with great choreography. Old school greatness.
Excellent Fun! No old school kung fu movie needs to be realistic or serious. It's all about the moves.

Technicolor really does movies like this justice by evoking a sense of warmth and ...
The opening scene features a crane beak strike to exploding balls technique. I couldn't stop laughing after that enough to take this chop socky flick seriously enough. And again in the next fight scene, everyone keeps going for the balls. Never seen that in a martial arts film before. At least the movie doesn't take itself too seriously. Technicolor really does movies like this justice by evoking a sense of warmth and life in what otherwise would be a miserable dreary hovel. There is no stigma of social classes here, a man (and woman) is judged solely on ass-kicking and ball-bursting skills alone. We don't care about food, drink or paying rent - only that our kung fu is better than yours and we will shove it up your ass to prove it. Not much of a story to be told here. It is quite a good movie to watch while cleaning the house or reading a book.Note: For you Tarantino fans, this movie is the inspiration for the Pai Mei character in Kill Bill. Tarantino directly lifted many elements of the film including the character's name, his appearance, his beard stroking mannerisms, and his signature move.

I see you've come prepared to be my guest.
One of my favorite kung fu movies. Two young kung fu fighters have managed to strike a blow for the shaolin by killing a powerful priest. But now his colleague Pak Mei is here for his revenge, and he's a master of the invincible armor technique. Can he be defeated? This one is fun for its villain, and for the rather goofy kung fu in the film. The hero has to learn "women's style" among other odd techniques to beat him, which leads to some inventive (and rather bizarre) training and battle sequences. Seeing Gordon Liu mincing around is a sight to behold. The villain is both charming and despicable, and the last fight is pretty epic. All around fun kung fu movie.

The tenacious protagonist vs. the unforgettable antagonist
Remarkable performance by Lo Lieh as White Lotus. He's extremely witty, but still manages to maintain a menacing presence. Now this is how you make a villain memorable. Gordon Liu shines as the determined hero. The final fight is interesting to say the least. Only negative is the annoying slapstick character (you'll know him when you see him). That aside, this is an entertaining movie with a high re-watch value.

No Original Language Options....What's the deal?!
Classic Shaw Brothers film, but I prefer reading subtitles and hearing the original language than listening to the corny English over dubs. Amazon doesn't provide language options for these great films is a damn shame! A damn dirty shame. Come on amazon! Get with it!

Enjoyable enough
Clan of the White Lotus was released in 1980, in the middle of a great period for kung fu movies. The film was directed by Lo Lief, written by Haung Tien and released by the famous Shaw Brothers. The stars of the movie are the impressive Gordon Liu, Lo Lieh and Kara Hui. The fight choreography was done by Lau Kar Leung, most famous for the incredible work on Drunken Master II and many others.Clan of the White Lotus is a movie I picked up on a whim. I've been enjoying a lot of re-releases featuring Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung etc and was looking for others of the genre. My main reason for acquiring the film was the fact that it was released by the Shaw Brothers, a name I have heard so much about but have no experience with. I'm very glad I picked the movie up. Whilst it left a little to be desired visually, it was highly enjoyable and really enjoyed the work of Gordon Liu.The story telling is very simple and it seems that the movie picks up where another left off. With that said, it was very easy to follow and felt a little bare bones at times. To put it basically, we see the death of Pai Mei at the hands of Man Ting Hung at the start of the movie. White Lotus seeks revenge and goes out of his way to have the assassins killed. Unfortunately for him, he only gets one of his targets and Man Ting Hung escapes with his sister in law. He uses her expertise in kung fu to seek revenge. It's a charming enough story. The characters are all well done and have just enough depth. The fight choreography was very good, for the most part. There were a few moments at the beginning of the film where I thought it looked a little silly and was more like an excuse to do as many hand gestures and flips as possible. However, the main fight scenes featuring Liu and Lieh were all very well done. They show the main characters progression as he attempts to get his revenge and it's very fun to watch. The visual quality of this 88 Films remaster is the one major complaint I have with the film. There are times where the movie looks utterly fantastic. Just as good as their Jackie Chan releases. But there are moments (usually outside), where there's a strange flickering or some kind of anomaly that is really distracting. There are also moments where the film appears to have a minor green tinge to it and one specific scene where the quality is very low, soft and heavily discoloured. It's nowhere near the level of 8 Diagram Pole Fighter or the other kung fu re-releases. A bit of a shame really. As a whole, I did enjoy the movie and I certainly would recommend it. It's not the best kung fu film I've seen but it was well paced, funny and action packed. I really can't complain about that at all. If you're looking for a good old fashioned action film, this one will certainly scratch that itch.
