ScalaMen's Raffia Lifeguard with Cord

I have alway loved my Dorfman Pacific SCALA Men's Raffia Lifeguard Hat which is why I ordeeds my 3rd one. The other two lasted for years. First one bought in 2008, second one 2013. This new purchase, after one trip is falling apart and looks worse the 2013 purchase. I am very disappointed the Raffia, it is unraveling and looks all scraggily. I have to trim it every time I where it. The material used for the cord also appears to have been changed and is a lot stiffer. Not the qulaity I am used to or expected from the Company.

The design and execution of this hat is just perfect! The neutral color and classic design work equally well with a sundress at the beach or battling weeds in the garden. The strap that keeps the hat in place allows the hat to sit a bit loosely against the head while not getting blown off with every stiff breeze, so it's less hot on the forehead than hats that require a suction fit to stay put. The high center of the hat lets air circulate and leaves plenty of room for my hair when it's put up in a bun. I am finding this hat to be cool and comfortable. So far it's standing up to the nasty humidity around here without losing it's shape, perhaps owing to the smart design of the slightly downward angle of its wide shading brim. The strap can be switched out with any other strapping material to taste. Hope it stands the test of time because I just love the fit, style and comfort of this hat! Beats all other summer hats I've tried hands down.

My step Mom has this hat, which was given to her by her Father.I got to wear it on a hike & fell in love.Was SUPER happy to see the company is still around, & STILL making the same amazing hat!!The one I bought fits, looks, & feels just like the one my step grandfather owned.Now that's a pretty amazing feat. Wonderful integrity!It's made of raffia (you know, that soft grassy stuff that sometimes people use as bows on presents, or flower companies tie around a vase) so it's softer than the stiffness of straw. This hat will bend easily, is super comfortable & just all around great. Very happy with my purchase.

Great construction and feel. "Leather" cord is a bit manufactured but I'll likely replace with a piece of my own lace when this one bites it or even before since it's already shredding. Doesn't make good sense to put pleather on such a genuine straw article in my mind but I like longevity even when it's not the fashion so much.

This is about my 6th one of these. I buy one about every 2 years. Holds up way better than any other straw hat like it, because of the way it's woven. Other straw hats don't hold up - especially if you jump in the water with them or are a little rough with them. I normally bought these from a local outdoor store - but they went out of business. :-(

Great initially for the first 3 months, but then it completely fell apart and it was expensive:( First the plastic binding ring inside came out making it shapeless and now it has this huge rip on the side. Very frustrating...

Love the hat, style, weight, fit but… the plastic wire that keeps the brim in shape has popped out can’t be woven back in.

I only wear this hat because it's large and covers me up. It is described as a Men's hat but I am using it. It's not too heavy or too masculine. People ask me where I buy my hats from. Scala makes good quality products. This is my second one. The first one lasted 8 years. The only reason I bought a new one is the leather cord broke. Nothing wrong with the hat.
