This is my tribute to Maize/Corn - the grain of our lives, in the form of a wall hanging. Maize; creating a patchwork quilt across the United States of America. This is America’s number one crop and used for so many things in our daily lives. I have chosen to honor the Native Americans in my tribute to maize. In keeping with Native American tradition most of the plant was used. In this piece I choose the color of the deerskin to represent the color of maize itself. It is appropriate that maize was the preferred grain of the deer as well. The golden color of the deerskin representing the color of maize itself. It was even a preferred grain of the deer. The weaving in the upper right is made of corn leaves woven into the fringe representing a corn field. On the left side are corn plants that are branded into the leather. There are four rows of corn kernels that represent the four colors/seasons of the medicine wheel, and on the top left is a miniature full ear of corn. Sometimes I seem to have to make a piece, just for the sake of art itself. This is one of those pieces, one thing led to another in my mind and I just couldn't shake it. This is made out of golden tanned deer hide, corn (maize), corn leaves, an ear of corn, and Indiana driftwood. This can be hung by two nails that can hide under the leather, or by fishing line strung through the leather and hung on either a nail or a professional hanging system. The fringe is free flowing and will move with a light breeze. I also choose to do this so that both sides of the hide are used. This is a really nice affect I think and honors the deer very well. The corn kernels were painstakingly .......and I am serious about that!!!! painstakingly drilled and strung. I used Indian corn and the kernels are extremely hard when they are dry. It took considerable time to string it but they look so cool. Just like beads. Size is 48" X 20". Please email me with any questions you have.
