Great backpack for international travel!
This bag was great for my three week trip to Africa - both inland and the coast. It fit exactly what I needed: my camera, multiple lenses, cleaners, and additional supplies in the bottom portion while I was also able to carry all of my tech necessities like chargers, extra batteries, headphones, a book, sunglasses, snacks, sunscreen, and bug spray in the top while still managing to close. With all of this was it a tight fit? Yes. But, it did exactly what I needed it to do, and after purchasing and returning about 7 other backpack options before finally caving and sacrificing close to $300 for this one? It was actually worth it.Some days on my trip I took the bottom camera sling bag out and carried it on its own, there is a small zippered slot on the top side of it that conveniently fit my travel wallet so going in to any local markets or shopping areas made for easy access to what I needed instead of carrying everything. The back opening was also a big comfort as I was traveling alone and added some extra security. There is a laptop sleeve along the back as well, I would say if your backpack is pretty full inside that you wont be able to utilize this sleeve without feeling like your camera is being squeezed or squished, even with it being padded. I was able to fit my folder with my travel documents in that sleeve but it was still a very tight fit.I would say a downside is that my water bottle did not fit in the side pockets but with a quick caribiner fix it clipped on to one of the outer loops on the front. Another issue is getting the sling pack back into the bag is a harder fit and never seems to be quite right but zips in just fine.Definitely a keeper for international travel and saved space and time on my 3 weeks away and 26+ hours of travel back home! And in the end, none of my gear was damaged.

Great bag
I was skeptical at first but after using the bag for a week on my recent cruise to Alaska, it's very functional. One of my big hang ups when I first got was the roll top vs. a zipper. That is not an issue at all. In fact, I really like the roll top. The removable camara bag is a nice option although I found it was a bit awkward when carried on it's own. That being said, it still gives you that flexibility which I love. Overall I'm very pleased with the bag.

Quality and Versatility
I know Thule as a maker of outdoor equipment. I have a favorable impression of the company, having seen their products used by avid outdoors enthusiasts. So when I found out that they make backpacks, I was intrigued.I try to evaluate products on their merits alone, without factoring in price. I should mention, however, that this backpack is very expensive. The quality of the materials is high. The understated fabric is tough and the weave dense. There are also multiple layers, unlike cheaper backpacks with just a single layer of material. Not surprisingly, the inner part of the material looks like it has been treated with a weather sealant. The only drawback is that there is no manual. It's not like a backpack requires rocket science, but it would be nice to understand the function and be aware of every feature. There are many. The feature list contained a few hints, but many things I had to figure out myself. The padding that goes against your back is thicker and tougher than on most backpacks I'm used to. Actually, I've never had a high-end backpack, so back padding was either minimal or nonexistent. The lower part of the back padding is thicker, as if it were designed for the curve of your lower back. It is thicker primarily because it serves as a pocket that completely encloses a buckled waist belt, hiding it and keeping it out of the way when you aren't using it. If it was designed that way, it's pretty clever. The zippers seem to have a high number of teeth per inch, which results in higher performance, and I would guess, durability. High teeth per inch probably also makes the zippers less likely to jam or become unlinked. The zipper at the top of the backpack has tough tabs on the ends, which you can use to pull against when you pull the zippers away from the ends. I like attention to detail, and that's an example. There are ample pockets, mesh and otherwise, of various shapes and sizes. Some are custom-designed, like the ones for laptops and tablets. One very unique feature is that there is a smaller, shoulder-slung bag with its own strap, inside the main bag. Not only is it inside the main bag, but it also integrates with it. Like a transformer, when it is inside the main bag, the smaller bag integrates with it in such a way, that it takes on a different function. The "doors" of the smaller bag, connect to side "doors" on either side of the main bag. Those zippered doors on the lower left and right of the main bag, open into compartments in the smaller bag. You have to see it yourself to really understand. It's novel and very clever.I travel with camera gear very often, so I like a pack that is capable of holding a mini/compact tripod. I don't know if this backpack was designed to carry compact tripods, but there are tough pockets on the lower left and right that are perfect for holding the legs or head of a small tripod. And right above those pockets, are straps that seem to have no other purpose than to hold a tripod in a vertical position. Some backpacks can hold a tripod horizontally on the bottom, but I think that the vertical position is superior and there are TWO of them on this backpack. Oh yeah! There are pockets of various sizes and types (mesh/no-mesh), optional configurations (a mini bag that integrates with or can be removed from the main bag), and little niceties (loop straps for attaching clips or carabiners). The quality of the materials, including fabric, zippers, straps, cords, etc. is top-notch. The design is clever and well-thought-out. Overall execution in terms of manufacturing and even packaging is a cut above. This pack is designed and made to carry, protect, and organize your stuff, while simultaneously taking ergonomics into account. The main shoulder straps have an optional chest strap that will keep the pack securely on your back instead of flopping around. Great if you are climbing tough terrain. In addition to that, you can go all out and use the normally concealed waist strap for ultimate stability. There is nothing I don't like and/or admire about this backpack... except maybe the price. But in life, you do tend to get what you pay for, and in my opinion, this backpack shines where others fall short.

Doesn't hold shape
The materials were a good quality and it had the right amount of pockets and nooks and crannies. But the issue is the backpack doesn’t hold its shape so once you put stuff in it, it just starts looking lopsided.

The best camera bag ever, and my best by itself finally
I suppose that there is no such thing as a "100% perfect bag" that suits you, and I have spent a lot of effort as well as money looking for better bags. When it comes to photography and travel, quite a few factors can go against one another. When, feeling exhausted, I come to make a compromise, it turns out to be money well spent sometimes. Other times, it turns out to be money thrown into the ditch.Having said that, I find this camera backpack almost perfect for me, a backpack I can feel united with as one body. Let me mention some good things and the downside about this item.Good Things:- The size excellent for a camera like Sony a7 series with 2 lenses, small bits and pieces, a thin A4 file for papers, 13" to 14" laptop or 11" tablet.- All these things are packed in this light, compact and well-organised bag.- The style of the top fastener may derive from the old-fashioned GP's home visit bag, quite a clever idea.- My hat off to the thought given to every part of the bag, allowing for easy and versatile access to items inside.- Despite the weight from these items, the shoulder straps provide comfortable walking experience (this may be quite subjective to every individual though).- The bag actually stays standing upright!, contrary to all those camera bags I have ever used over the years.Downside:- Typical of Scandinavian designs, there should be some "breathing space" given to some pockets. I find they are quite too tight for what they are intended for.- The G-shaped clip to tie a mono/tri-pod comes dangling often when it is not used (I do not carry mono/tri-pod but I am sure it will also be dangling when it is tied). I find this quite distracting in public places, in the aircraft, in the train.- The nylon 100% main material could have been something else for better water repellency performance.I had initially bought a black one a few months before and I was so delighted that I bought a slate grey one as a spare.
