The fabric does not have to be grounded. Regarding your concern about the material catching fire - the material is made out of copper. Indeed it may cause a fire if someone would insert the fabric into the electric outlet, that is why nothing is inserted there. The same will happen if electricity is being put through many other things. We recommend you to use it in accordance to the instructions.

Will this protect against radiation from my laptop?
