Grammarsaurus Key Stage 2: The Ultimate Guide to Teaching Non-Fiction Writing, Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar

A must buy for all Key Stage 2 teachers
Grammarsaurus is a company that has a passion and enthusiasm for learning. Having known about and dipped into their website and resources for a little while now, I had been contemplating buying their ultimate guide to teaching non fiction (Key Stage 2). I love teaching literacy and we have a set up we follow in our school which includes text marking where the children look at the features. Having taught in Year 5/6, I have worried this year that I have been stretching my class too far when asking them to include features so wondered if this book would help clarify. To make my decision I posted an Instagram story asking for reviews expecting just teachers to respond. Within 5 minutes, the people at grammarsaurus were messaging me, answering all my questions plus showing me examples of how they have set out the text types (including what are the key features to teach). They showed such enthusiasm for their book and real knowledge that I immediately ordered not only the KS2 but the KS1 version ( to differentiate for my lower ability children)These books do not disappoint and provide a depth of support. If you have not already bought a copy, I suggest you do. It is well worth the cost.

A Time saving MUST HAVE!
A MUST HAVE!!Regardless where you are in your teaching journey, this is an absolute must for any teacher's toolkit. Mitch and Anna have halved your planning time, honestly I'm not saying it.The overview at the start of each unit, highlights everything you need to consider when planning: grammar feaures, spellings in addition to literacy objectives)How long do we spend looking for high quality model texts?! Mitch provides us with not only a formidable example but also provides annotations! He has even created the success criteria for each genre!!Aside from delivering each lesson and adapting it to suit your specific theme, its all here, ultimately freeing our time up for the things that actually matter!

Incredible
I cannot begin to describe how long I have searched for a book like this. I have been preaching about this approach… notice I didn’t say scheme, (thank the lord), for so long now. Grammatical structures are the foundations of understanding writing - why it works and doesn’t work as a text type. I love the detailed examples with teaching points, annotations of the texts and a copy for you to use with your class. They are so accessible to all children, across a range of topics and clearly define and demonstrate progression throughout the phase. It’s perfect for challenging pupils or aiding those pupils who need extra advice to achieve EXS/ARE. Worth every penny and more!

A must buy for all Teachers!
What can I say about this fabulous book? It is a must buy for all Teachers! It really is the ultimate guide. Fantastic model texts which are broken down and annotated are pitched perfectly. I also love the Greater Depth texts which are included. They are fantastic because they focus on how to teach the specific spellings, grammar and punctuation. I am excited to use this in September. Thank you Grammarsaurus for creating such an exciting, inspiring and engaging guide. More importantly, I know the children I teach will enjoy the model texts and they will be able to produce their own high quality pieces of writing because of them.

Fantastic book for anyone planning lessons around non-fiction writing
This book is fab as it does all the hard work for me. It includes an overview for each text type and the specific requirements for each year regarding the necessary writing, grammar, spelling and punctuation for each year group . It also includes some fab models which can be used in class along with an annotated copy which highlights the key features. I'm a particular fan of the checklist section as a trainee as it allows me to double check I'm not missing any essential writing components.

Good but a glaring hole
Very clearly laid out and the model texts are very good. Unfortunately, there is not a letter writing section which is a big omission. There are many purposes to writing letters but I think there quite easily could have been an informal and formal letters sections with models of writing to argue & persuade. There is a section devoted to persuasive texts but no letters.

Essential for KS2 teachers!
Worth every penny! I will be purchasing the KS1 book shortly! This book has excellent non-fiction examples for years 3-6. Each non-fiction text comes with its own success criteria, including grammar, punctuation and spelling which marries up with the NC. It will save me so much time when planning writing now. The examples are high quality and even come with an annotated page for teachers to use as a guide. Brilliant resource.

Life altering for progress
After teaching the first unit and watching the progress from first to last piece of writing, my students progress was incredible. I was still able to be creative and teach new skills during the unit. I love this approach and cannot wait for the fiction book!
