Rothco MOLLE Compatible Machete Sheath - 18 Inch

We have a made in the USA 14” machete that we use around our property from time to time. I keep the machete fairly sharp, but not crazy sharp. (For the people who have their very sharp machetes cutting through the canvas sheath, a properly sharpened machete isn’t supposed to be razor sharp.) We wanted a good sheath to carry the machete. I first looked at hard sheaths, but numerous reviews stated the plastic sheaths don’t hold up well. I’ve purchased other Rothco products (including about a dozen different color boonie hats that are very well made of quality material) and they’ve all held up well, so I decided to try this Rothco machete sheath. Our 14” machete fits well in this sheath’s plastic insert. We have approximately 2” at the bottom of the sheath that isn’t filled by the blade, so there’s no chance of the blade cutting through the canvas sheath. The bottom inch of our machete’s handle fits into the top of the sheath. This helps in two ways. It allows the machete to be a bit more secure in the sheath and it takes up another inch in the bottom of the sheath thus making it fill the sheath better. The sheath has a large Velcro area that allows you to remove it first rom a belt without removing the belt. It also has 4 snap straps on the back of the sheath so you can attach the sheath to other items, including molle straps. To be honest, I don’t see a use for the small pockets on the front of the sheath, but if you need them, they’re there. The only complaint is related to the Velcro attachment. Even with a 2” nylon belt, the sheath’s belt loop is very large, really too large. Thus, every time the belt is removed, the sheath wants to fall off of the belt. It would be helpful if there was a way to adjust the size of the belt loop. With the exception of the minor belt loop size issue, this sheath seems to be well made and it works well for our needs.

I wanted to hook this sheath to my backpack molle. The snaps on the molle straps on back do not hold at all. You can lightly tug on them and they release, really weak snaps, wouldn't hold your pants on. They release just by shaking your pack.I have a Tramontina 18" machete. The machete bottoms out in the sheath before the handle comes in contact with the plastic liner. 1'2 inch of blade sits above the top of the liner and tip is bottomed out. The tip is going to puncture a hole in the bottom of the sheath, even though the tip of machete is ground flat or dull by manufacturer. The retaining strap is too long, you can pull half the machete out through the handle retaining strap loop. The velcro for wearing on belt is really good. The loops for attaching strap and wearing on your back are really good. I am going to make a liner for the sheath so it doesn't go through the bottom, possibly order better snaps and install them. Also shorten the handle retaining strap to fit my handle. If the snaps were good, and the sheath depth an inch longer, it would rock. Also if the liner was a full liner, the bottom is open and blade passes through it. Hope this helps someone in their decision.

I only required a sheath for storing a Tramontina machete that I inherited. I doubt if I'll ever wear it in the field, so it is adequate for my purposes. It looks good, has double stitching, fits my machete perfectly, but the snap at the top is too loose and will not hold the tool in the sheath if it's turned upside down.

I use this sheath to hold the 18" plastic machete sheath from Rothco or Ontario. Just trim off what does not fit inside after discarding the sleeve that comes with this fabric sheath. Now I have a sheath that fits better and is very easy to mount any place there are Molle attachments. The pouches on the front of this sheath are very handy as well, a perfect combination. That, and it is my favorite color too; olive drab. Highly recommended sheath here.

Very good sheath, works for a variety of knives and is well made good quality

I live in the Philippines. I spent a lot of time trekking through the jungles. The military quality material and sturdy construction of this sheath is perfect for those who want more than just a flimsy carrying case for their bolo or machete. The small pouches on the front side of this are truly a bonus for carrying miscellaneous items, like Compass, whistle, or other survival items. The multiple straps offer the user several ways of carrying this item on the leg, waist, or over the shoulder.
